If this sounds like you, we'd keen to talk to you about becoming a User Researcher within our digital Service Design and Experience team.

The role is currently fixed term for 12 months. However, there is potential for this to be extended or become permanent, subject to funding.

Main duties of the job

The role is key to putting user needs at the centre of decision making. As a User Researcher, you'll be responsible for planning, designing and carrying out research activities with a wide range of people that use our products and services to develop a deep understanding of their needs, behaviours, goals and motivations.

You'll work closely with colleagues to ensure the insights gained from this research are intrinsic to the design, implementation and continual improvement of digital services for health and care professionals and the general public.

Person Specification



  • Educated to degree level or relevant NHS experience.
  • Evidence of own continuing professional development.
  • Experience of working within a Digital Change Programme or similar environment.


  • Qualifications related to behavioural science, research or technology.
  • Agile qualifications/training.



  • Knowledge of user-centred design practises and current user research best practice.
  • Awareness of Research Ethics and Information Governance regulations.
  • Experience of identifying and recruiting research participants using a range of methods.
  • Experience of planning and delivering a range of both qualitative and quantitative user research methods and ability to choose appropriate methods for different stakeholder groups and scenarios.
  • Experience of presenting user research findings in a wide variety of formats and contexts.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders and facilitating workshops to gain an understanding of requirements and needs.
  • Experience of communicating and influencing across teams and of giving presentations to different audiences.
  • Understanding of the diversity of users of Health services and the need to make services usable and accessible for everyone.
  • Commitment to personal and professional development with a flexible approach to learning.
  • Ability to identify, capture and communicate innovation opportunities across different services.


  • Experience as a User Researcher or in a similar role.
  • Experience of working within Health and Social Care settings.
  • Knowledge of use of data and analytics to track and improve user experience.
  • Knowledge of agile ways of working and conducting user research in the different design phases.
  • Experience of translating user needs into recommendations and workable solutions.
  • Experience of user testing.
