The post holder vision and role are to lead with developing and implementing a PracticeDevelopment Nurse (PDN) role for the Ophthalmology Service. They will workcollaboratively with the MDT team to oversee the training and development matrix for keynursing and ophthalmic technician posts so that the best outcomes can be achieved forservice users and staff wellbeing.

The Post Holder will be a registered nurse, bound by the NMC Code and working alongsidethe Nursing Team, including Ophthalmic Technicians under the direction of a Matron and/orHead of Nursing.

Main duties of the job

Duties to include:
  • Maintain primary responsibility for ensuring the Care Group provides a progressive learning environment in conjunction with key people.
  • Support and coordinate the development of Registered Nurses, OphthalmicTechnicians, TNA's, NA's, and both pre- and post-registration staff by collaboratingwith colleagues from the MDT team.
  • Assist in the preparation of internationally educated nurses depending on specialist skills and area of expertise.
  • Support with statutory and mandatory training as required to ensure compliance within the Care Group and Trust wide (including, but not limited to, Medication Management: oral and IV drug administration, PGDs, working directives for nonregistered colleagues, medical training devices) in conjunction with key people.
  • To actively promote and contribute to inter-professional learning activities across the Care Group and Trust wide.

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trusts 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please emailmtw-tr.professionalstandards@nhs.netif this is problematic)and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Person Specification



  • Registered Nurse
  • Teaching qualification (minimum of ENB 998 or equivalent).


  • Master's degree in nursing or a health related subject.
  • Additional teaching qualification.



  • Experience as a Band 6 Registered Nurse or equivalent
  • Experience of leading and developing teams
  • Demonstrable achievement in practice based education or clinical practice development.
  • Experience of successfully implementing change.
  • Up to date knowledge and understanding of health care and educational policy and processes as it relates to nursing practice.


  • A record of achieving projects to tight deadlines and to a high standard.



  • IT literate (able to manage files and use all Microsoft Office applications).
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to implement and develop policy into practice.
  • Good analytical/critical appraisal and deductive reasoning skills.
  • Well developed communication skills including: interpersonal skills, negotiating and influencing skills, writing and presentation skills - able to communicate at all levels within a large organisation.
  • Excellent facilitation skills.
