An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the maternity team at The Hillingdon Hospital as our Specialist Midwife for asylum seekers/refugees and migrants.

This is a new role and is designed specifically for the needs of pregnant women/birthing people who are asylum seekers/refugees and migrants to support their improved outcomes.

The role of the postholder is to develop and monitor a pathway for service users who are asylum seekers/refugees/migrants accessing maternity care and support in providing care to this group of women/ birthing people and their babies alongside our maternity workforce.The post holder will provide antenatal and postnatal care to service users who are seeking asylum.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take responsibility, in partnership with the senior management team, in improving the pathway for this group of service users, ensuring access to maternity services within their unit and across the Northwest London sector. The post holder will have responsibility for gathering information, networking with asylum support services, reporting, raising awareness, training, and working towards addressing health inequalities in these areas as they relate to both service users and staff within maternity services.

The post holder will inspire confidence and innovation amongst our incredible workforce, who together, ensure the women/birthing people and staff are safe, cared for and listened too. They will work collaboratively with the maternity teams, maternity managers, governance and education teams to provide seamless pathways of care and ensure a positive safety and team culture.

Person Specification



  • Registered Midwife
  • First level degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Mentorship or teaching accreditation: ENB 997 or equivalent, SSSA supervisor and assessor.
  • Experience of working / supporting asylum seekers/ refugees and /or migrants
  • Experience of working with diverse groups of women
  • Substantial post registration experience in all areas of midwifery practice
