A great opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, experienced and dynamic nurse to join the Colorectal Nurse Team at ColchesterHospital

We are looking for an experienced nurse who has knowledge and experience in colorectal nursing. You must have the passion and drive toprovide high quality patient centred care.

You will deliver a high quality specialist nursing service to our patients at the beginning of the cancer pathway assessing patients referred to theteam with suspected colorectal cancers.

The role will include telephone triage of patients assessing their fitness for investigations as well assupporting the Colorectal Cancer CNS team as required.

Experience of looking after cancer patients and clinical skills in stoma care would behelpful in the role.

You will work closely with a multi disciplinary team, you will be a valued member of the team and you will have input in developing the colorectalservice.

This is a challenging and demanding role and requires a proactive, self-motivated, dedicated person who is capable of understanding complexcare pathways across multiple agencies and services to ensure the highest quality of care and service delivery for our patients.

You will have excellent communication skills, be able to manage your own work load and have problem solving skills. You will be an excellent team player but equally be able to work in a self-directed manner.

Please note this is a Job Share and working days will be Mondays and Wednesdays 0900-1700

Main duties of the job

  • The GI Cancer Support Nurse will play a pivotal role in assessing GP referrals for patients with Lower GI (colorectal cancers) byreviewing the GP referral proforma and/or via telephone assessment.
  • Liaise with GP practices, patients, the Cancer Hub staff, Endoscopy booking staff, outpatient booking staff, consultant secretaries andconsultants as required.
  • Assess the most suitable first face to face contact in secondary care and ensure that cancer standards are adhered to.

Person Specification



  • Current NMC registration
  • Evidence of continuous and personal development


  • Post-registration qualification in gastroenterology/Colorectal care at Diploma level and ability to undertake level 3 education



  • Experience in gastroenterology/colorectal nursing
  • Proven post-registration experience
  • Involvement in service development and implementation of change.



  • Demonstrate knowledge of GI cancer symptoms
  • Demonstrate knowledge of common GI symptom management
