An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the maternity team at The Hillingdon Hospital as our Preterm Birth Midwife.

This is a new role and is designed specifically for the needs of pregnant women/birthing people who are at high risk of premature birth.

The post holder will work within a Preterm Birth service, which is led by a consultant obstetrician. The post holder will be responsible for the triage and management of referrals, provide clinical midwifery care to women/birthing people at risk of preterm birth and facilitate the appropriate follow up care with the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring Element 5 of Saving Babies Lives (SBLV3) care bundle across the Trust and contributing to the reduction of stillbirth. The post holder will support quality improvement initiatives including identifying areas for improvement / themes arising from clinical incidents. This includes regional initiatives such as Best Prem Care Bundle and promoting its use in all clinical areas.

The post holder will inspire confidence and innovation amongst our incredible workforce, who together, ensure the women/birthing people and staff are safe, cared for and listened too.

To provide pregnant women/birthing people with risk factors for preterm labour and birth with high quality, safe midwifery care. The care will be evidence based and holistic in meeting women's/birthing people's individual needs and the midwife will be expected to work autonomously within the guidelines and sphere of professional practice. The postholder will act as a mentor, a leader and effective role model, providing essential support in complex and sensitive situations. In addition, the post holder will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring the Element 5 of Saving Babies Lives (SBLV3) care bundle across the Trust and contributing to the reduction of stillbirth.

Person Specification



  • Registered Midwife
  • First level degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
  • Professional training/learning which demonstrates highly developed professional knowledge / continuing professional development
  • SSSA Practice Assessor/ Mentorship qualification
  • Broad range of clinical midwifery experience acquired through significant practice in a variety of settings.
  • Experience of risk management and quality assurance
  • Experience of audit and research
