Urology Outpatients and diagnostics would like to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic full time or part time Band 5 Registered Nurse(s). We will also consider a twelve month secondment if you want to increase your urology knowledge and skills.

The post holder will work in the urology outpatients and diagnostic team. We are part of a large multi-disciplinary team with more than 20 Consultants and registrars, cancer nurse specialist, nurse practitioners, radiographers, clinical scientist, and research nurses. North Bristol NHS trust (NBT)is a tertiary referral center, and we see patients from across the Southwest with penile cancers, mesh complications. The main urology site is Southmead Hospital, we also have a unit in Weston General Hospital Weston Super Mare and clinics in Cosham hospital that the nursing team support at times. The role is Monday to Friday with the occasional weekend. Clinics run from 08:00 to 18:00 and we have a late clinic on a Wednesday 08:00 to 20:30.

You will have most of your weekends free and no night shifts.

Main duties of the job

YOU, the successful candidate, will:
  • Be passionate and empathetic with patients always put the patient first.
  • Be a dynamic individual who is able to work flexible to cover a variety of urology clinics
  • Be knowledgeable, understands and adheres to policy and procedures
  • Deliver clinical and therapeutic care to patients as required within set protocols/policies and within the scope of the Registered Nurse remit.
  • After a period of training and supervision you will facilitate and assist a variety of clinics and day case activities including diagnostics, prostate biopsies, flexible cystoscopies, Botox administration, clinician led clinics and lithotripsy. You will be assisted to develop your skills to carry out nurse led clinics including bladder installations, complex catheter change and trial without catheter clinics.
  • A team player able to work effectively within a team in a busy environment or independently in a nurse led clinic with senior support if needed
  • Support colleagues to provide the best care for the patients

Key responsibilities include:
  • Organise and participatein the delivery of high standardsof evidence basednursing care.
  • Take regular responsibility to carry out requiredplanned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance withestablished nursing procedures and policies.
  • To report to the appropriate membersof the multidisciplinary team any significant changes in a patients condition or situation.
  • Responsible for taking charge of clinics in the department on a regular basisand occasionally take charge of the department.
  • To contribute towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, supportand advice, as necessary Ensure referral to appropriate professionalsor agencies as required.
  • In the absence of senior staff be responsible fordelegation and supervision of appropriate workto other qualified staff, Assistant Practitioners ,HealthCare Assistantsand students
  • Where relevant, responsible for the admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations.
  • Escort patients to other wards or departments as required.
  • To take personal responsibility for ensuring that patients are treated with courtesy at all timesand that the individual needs of patients are respectedand confidentiality is maintainedat all times.
  • Liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments as appropriate.
  • To be able to act in emergency situations and to be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation. To be responsible forthe support and direction of junior staff in such situations according to Trust policy.
  • To be responsible forensuring provision of a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitorsand colleagues.

Person Specification



  • Registered General Nurse with valid NMC registration


  • Recognised Teaching/Mentorship Qualification
  • Relevant speciality post-registration qualification/course
  • Documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Work Experience


  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to perform or willingness to undertake training for additional skills required by the department. ie. venepuncture, cannulation, assisting with Flexible cystoscopy, LATP (prostate biopsy), laser, botox. Male catheterisation and suprapubic catheter change, bladder installations, intermittent self-catheterisations, enhanced recovery clinic and dressing changes.


  • Relevant post-graduate experience working in urology, surgery or outpatients
  • Relevant experience in the NHS
  • Evidence of assessing/ mentoring nursing students/ and health care support workers



  • Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and multidisciplinary team. Proven ability to work effectively in a team
  • Ability to work as a professional role model with a positive 'can do' attitude to work and change
  • Knowledge of the NMC code of conduct, local and trust policy and procedures
  • Ability to work calmly, evaluate situations, solve problems and make sensible effective decisions, well organised
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety
  • Effective use of all resources
  • Basic computer / IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service
  • Competence with surgical clinical skills (e.g. complex wound management, male and female catheterisation) and willingness to learn new skills.


  • Understanding and evidence of involvement in audit and research.
