An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, experienced and dynamic senior nurse to join the Specialist Colorectal Nurse Team at Colchester Hospital

We are looking for an experienced nurse who has extensive knowledge and experience in colorectal /cancer nursing.

The right person must have a passion and drive to provide high quality patient centred care. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist - colorectal care, you will be supporting patients from diagnosis, through treatment, who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Main duties of the job

As an experienced colorectal nurse you will deliver a high quality specialist nursing service to our patients and staff by promoting excellence in practice through teamwork and evidence based care and practice, you will have experience of looking after colorectal cancer patients.

You will work closely with a variety of health care professionals and the management team, you will be a valued member of the team and you will have input in developing the colorectal service.

The is a challenging and demanding role and requires a proactive, self-motivated, dedicated person who is capable of managing complex care pathways across multiple agencies and services to ensure the highest quality of care and service delivery for all patients.

You will have excellent communication skills, be able to manage your own work load and have problem solving skills. You will be an excellent team player but equally be able to work autonomously.

Person Specification



  • Proven post registration experience
  • Experience at band 6 level
  • Experience of GI nursing
  • Evidence of managing and improving the patient experience
  • Experience in research and audit


  • Oncology experience/qualification



  • Registered Nurse First Level
  • Post registration qualifications relevant to speciality


  • Master's degree (or working towards.)
  • Teaching qualification



  • Excellent knowledge of GI anatomy and physiology and effect of disease upon these systems.
  • Good understanding of colorectal cancer pathways
  • Ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.
  • Evidence of commitment to customer care initiatives and incorporation of cultural values into practice
  • Knowledge of Multidisciplinary team working
  • Awareness of CNS role and their position within Multidisciplinary team
  • Articulates an understanding of the role in nurse led clinics.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Clinical Governance



  • Excellent interpersonal skills with particular ability to show empathy and consideration for others.
  • Ability to lead and influence staff.
  • Ability to show tact and manage boundaries
  • Ability to set and monitor standards.
  • Car driver with current driving licence
