An exciting opportunity to work in a busy NM department which covers a wide range of examinations.

The Nuclear Medicine department is situated within the main Radiology department and operates 8 AM-6PM Monday to Friday.

The NM department has a Siemens Symbia Intevo SPECT CT Gamma camera which was installed 2018.

The post holder will also be required to undertake out of hours working within the main department where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

  • To work within the Nuclear Medicine Department alongside the Superintendent and other health professionals. To provide a Nuclear Medicine Service to patients under the Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.
  • To provide a high level of patient care at all times, whilst still maintaining and delivering an efficient service.
  • To communicate effectively with internal and external agencies.
  • To undertake Continual Professional Development
  • To adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, IR(ME)R, ARSAC, COSHH and Equal Opportunities

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities: to include a level of responsibility:

1.1 To perform all routine Nuclear Medicine imaging and processing in line with department protocol.

1.2 To assist with the QC of the Nuclear Medicine equipment.

1.3 To assist in the dispensing and disposal of radiopharmaceutical kits and be familiar with the programme Isostock/or similar.

1.4 To administer the appropriate radiopharmaceutical, in the appropriate way, conforming to the Trusts infection control and venepuncture policies.

1.5 To participate in clinical audits.

1.6 To complete all administrative tasks in a timely manner and completed daily.

1.7 To manage their own work and time and adapt working practices to accommodate changes to workload, and liaise with other staff to provide and efficient service.

1.8 To manage the clinical day list as appropriate.

1.9 To supervise junior staff and students within the Nuclear Medicine Department.

1.10 Ensure that all patients are treated with consideration and care that is appropriate to their condition, using clinical judgment as to the optimum technique, selection of equipment and other parameters

1.11 To comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 and the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2000 and the departmental protocols for the implementation of IR(ME)R and ARSAC.

1.12 To abide by the local rules for radiation protection

2. Education and development responsibilities:

2.1 To keep up to date in all new techniques and trends and be able to demonstrate Continuing Professional Development.

2.2 To incorporate evaluation into working practices in order to achieve objectives and ensure effectiveness.

2.3 To participate in the practical training of student radiographers, departmental assistants and junior staff within the Nuclear Medicine Department.

2.4 To ensure mandatory training is kept up to date.

2.5 To attend staff meetings.

2.6 To actively develop the role to benefit the Nuclear Medicine department.

Infection Control

All Trust employees are required to be familiar with, and comply with, the Trust polices and guidelines for infection control and hand hygiene in order to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections.

For clinical staff with direct patient contact, this will include the uniform and dress code policy, the use of personal protective equipment, the guidance on aseptic techniques and the safe handling and disposal of sharps.

All staff are required to attend mandatory training in Infection Control and be compliant with all measures known to be effective in reducing healthcare-associated infections.

Sustainability

It is the responsibility of all staff to minimise the Trust's environmental impact by recycling wherever possible, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use, minimising water usage and reporting faults promptly.

Person Specification

Education and Training

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography, or equivalent
  • HCPC registration or MTO equivalent
  • Evidence of CPD, including Nuclear Medicine specific study days


Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification in Nuclear Medicine


Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Generalised knowledge of all imaging modalities
  • Extensive and specialist knowledge of NM
  • Able to work under own initiative.
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective team working skills
  • Ability to plan and prioritise while working under pressure and acting autonomously
  • Able to make a rapid assessment and act appropriately
  • Conversant with all aspects of the Radiology Information System
  • Leadership and teaching skills
  • Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures


Desirable

  • Awareness of developments in NHS.
