The East & South East London NHS Pathology Partnership (Pathology Partnership) is a Pathology network formed across three NHS Trusts: Barts Health, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

Suitable candidates must have extensive experience in Cellular Pathology and immunohistochemistry.

Main duties of the job

The Immunohistochemistry department is seeking to recruit a competent, enthusiastic, and highly motivated individual, with substantive experience in Cellular Pathology and Immunohistochemistry to provide technical / quality support to our professional and friendly team at The Royal London Hospital (RLH).

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day operations of their section, reporting weekly / monthly data to NHSE for the CVLP /CPGC TAT. Attending meetings relating to the CPGC/CVLP and working closely with NHSE to expand and grow the service.

The candidate will also take part in the solid tumour pathways working with both IHC and molecular leads to support these pathways to ensure TAT are met.

Optimisation of new tests and troubleshooting IHC and ISH is essential therefore previous expert experience and expertise in this area is essential for the role.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services Immunology Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Immunophenotyping Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma. The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. �126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Person Specification



  • Extensive experience in Histopathology and immunohistochemistry
  • Extensive experience at optimisation / verification of antibodies / ISH
  • Experience in management and setting up workflows in a diagnostic setting.
  • Experience managing staff
  • Experience of introducing new methodologies with IHC / ISH / FISH


  • Competent at screening IHC cases for ER, PR, HER2.
  • Competent at screening IHC cases for DDISH.
  • Competent at screening IHC cases for FISH.



  • Experience in complex troubleshooting of IHC
  • Able to analyse, present routine data / results to a wide variety of audience.
  • Leadership and management
  • Experience in workflow change



  • Advanced specialist knowledge of IHC
  • Detailed understanding of UKAS ISO 15189 and participating in UKAS assessments at a senior level.
  • Understanding managerial and leadership methods.
  • Experience of process mapping.



  • HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist
  • BSc - Biomedical Science
  • MSc - Biomedical Science or related field
