Fixed-term/Secondment to the Safeguarding Families Together team. This new model brings together key skilled professionals to support the family with their needs including mental health and ultimately, hopefully by working in a wrap around effect with other different services, it will ultimately reduce the number of children who are taken into care.

The SFT model is based on delivering intervention and support. It means social workers and adult professionals can focus on doing what they are trained to do, without getting bogged down in bureaucracy and paperwork. By having professionals from different disciplines working under one roof, our teams are able to work closely together, minimising time spent on making referrals to other agencies for support.

It also means that the responsibility for a family is shared among a team of professionals, reducing the risk placed on any one individual. Instead, social workers, Child and Family Workers, domestic abuse practitioners & officers, recovery workers, mental health practitioners and psychologists all work closely together to support families and keep children safe. All workers participate in group supervision and contribute to analysis and decision making.

Main duties of the job

The SFT Families together team aims to keep the highest risk children and families in Dorset together safely, improve health and educational outcomes for the children and reduce physical and emotional harm in families.

The SFT teams are made up of social care practitioners and adult specialists to work with parents in relation to domestic abuse, mental health and substance misuse.

These teams will work together to support families to keep together where it is safe to do so. Our approach is to support families using a technique of motivational interviewing which is designed to empower and engage parents to make the positive changes needed to achieve improved outcomes for their children and their own wellbeing. Motivational Interviewing training will be provided . By meeting the complex needs of the adults, we can reduce the risk to children.

The SFT Teams will include a range of specialists who will work alongside our Social Workers and Child and Family Workers and all attend group based MDT supervision.

This is a fixed term role and for those with current NHS service, the role will be offered on a secondment basis only. Please obtain permission to be released on a secondment before submitting an application.

Person Specification

Educational Requirements / Qualifications


  • Masters level training in a Mental Health profession or an appropriate relevant equivalent qualification.
  • MBA or other equivalent managerial qualification or equivalent experience.

Skills & Competencies


  • Able to lead a service and make decisions and judgments about the best possible way forward in a complex work environment where the evidence base is evolving.
  • Able to influence and work with local partners in health and social care developing new services
  • Computer literate, able to use word and spreadsheets
  • Demonstrates high standards in written and verbal communication
  • Proven ability of analysis of information from data bases
  • Ability to develop and use a risk strategy
  • Able to develop good professional relationships with staff, clients working partners and the general public
  • Proven ability in carrying out clinical audits
  • Able to demonstrate experience of workforce planning in a clinical service



  • Demonstrates an understanding of the national IAPT service and how it links to governmental objectives
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of the issues surrounding work and the impact it can have on mental health / benefits & employment systems
  • Demonstrates an understanding for the need to use evidence based psychological therapies and how it relates to this post
  • Understanding of New Ways of Working



  • Trained to a high level in clinical or psychological skills required in the service
  • Good record of Continuing Professional Development and willingness to continue this
