We are looking for an experienced/newly qualified SCPHN School Nurse/Health Visitor to join our our school nursing team, workingcollaboratively with Locality School Nurse Team leaders/ Clinical service Leads and our Operational Lead in the delivery of the healthy Child Programme.

Applicants must hold a specialist community public health nurse qualification in school nursing or Health Visiting . This is an essential requirement for the position and applicants who apply without this qualification will NOT be shortlisted.

Due to the nature of the role it would be desirable that applicants are car owners and drivers due to the size of the Borough of Croydon

Main duties of the job

The emphasis of the role will be working within a skill mix team and working closely with Locality Team- leads/ Clinical Service Leads todeliver measurable outcomes to the school aged population in Croydon.

The successful candidates will bepart of aa locality school nurse team and will be responsible for a defined caseload,demonstrate excellence and leadership in practice . Successful candidates will be expected to develop and implement public health initiatives to promote the health and well-being of children and young people, enabling them reach their full potential and access all areas of the curriculum.

It is expected that our successful candidates will be committed to delivering evidence based practice, maintain current knowledge of local and national issues that impact on the school-age population. Successful candidates will be required to professionally contribute to the on-going development of the school nursing service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To work in partnership with team members, service users, Croydon Health Service (CHS) staff and all stake holders in promoting the health and well-being of Children, Young People aged 5-19 years, and their families.
  • To provide effective line management support to junior staff.
  • To identify and monitor health needs of a given population using profiling tools and facilitate the implementation of evidence based health care. The practitioner will work in line with Working Together, 4, 5, 6 School Nursing Model and the Healthy Child Programme and all policies that promote and safeguard children 5-19 years and their families
  • To assess client needs, using the Assessment Framework and Risk Assessment tools as appropriate and plan, implement and evaluate evidenced based care given
  • To work in partnership with other team leaders, Practice Educator and multidisciplinary teams in the development of innovative clinical practice in line with the Healthy Child Programme and the 4, 5, 6 School Nursing Model.
  • To manage a designated work load and skill mix team, in line with CHS policies, guidelines and standards, including the development and performance management of team members
  • To maintain a high professional profile and role model for nursing and health care services within CHS
  • To act as an advocate within a multi-disciplinary framework for families and children to promote the best outcomes for their health and well being.
  • To adhere to the London Safeguarding Children procedures, national and local CHS safeguarding policy and procedures
  • To actively promote immunisation programmes
  • To assess the needs, support and advise families where the child/young person has a long-term illness or disability. Working in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team
  • To report all incidents and accidents involving clients and staff
  • To attend all statutory and mandatory training and be aware of responsibility in the event of an emergency
  • To support the School Nursing Operational Lead and School Nursing team to achieve universal and targeted commissioned service

    • Knowledge of national and local strategies pertaining to school health
    • Demonstrate knowledge of the Children Act, Working Together and London Child Protection Procedures
    • Awareness of current issues relating to teenager's sexual health and contraceptive needs, and the associated risk factors
    • Knowledge of child protection procedures and partnership working
    • Understanding evidence based practice, audit and clinical governance


    • Additional training and experience in the emotional health and well-being of adolescents



    • Experience of delivering health promotion programmes
    • Experience of supporting school staff and pupils to manage complex health needs
    • Experience of analysing and interpreting health needs profiles and using them to inform practice


    • Experience of facilitating group work
    • Experience of providing sexual health advice to teenagers



    • Demonstrate the ability to work in partnership with young people, their parents and carers, and other health professionals
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills, including an ability to build rapport and establish good one-one relations with young people and colleagues
    • Computer literate


    • Leadership skills, sufficient to manage a small teamee Person spec
