The B5 Occupational Therapist role is integral to the delivery of occupational therapy across several locations including St George's main hospital site, Queen Mary's and Community services in Wandsworth. This post is integral to the delivery of activity with clear specifications around staffing ratios, timeliness of assessment and intensity of rehabilitation, functional retraining and discharge planning of patients. The role is essential in order to support/facilitate flow and patient care through clinical pathways and the post supports the delivery of 7 day services.

Main duties of the job

1. To undertake Occupational Therapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits, enabling patients in areas of self maintenance, productivity, leisure and facilitating safe discharge from service.

2.To gather relevant medical, clinical and social information and analyse and interpret all information gained.

3. To accept, prioritise and monitor referrals in liaison with supervisor.

4. To work with patients and their carers to identify and prioritise their needs and agree Occupational Therapy goals as part of an overall treatment plan.

5.To use clinical reasoning skills to select occupational activity for therapeutic intervention, which is meaningful for the patient.

6. To monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure the progress and effectiveness of intervention.

7. To involve Occupational Therapy/Rehabilitation Assistants in packages of care for patients, as appropriate, delegating and monitoring their intervention.

8. To assess and recommend equipment/minor adaptations which will assist patients in achieving the maximum level of independence and quality of life in daily living activities.

9.To keep accurate up-to-date records on patient care, treatment and equipment provision, which comply with quality standards of Trust/Service policies and meet legal requirements

10.To carry out Occupational Therapy intervention in a variety of home and community settings as appropriate.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Qualification in Occupational Therapy.
  • Registered as an Occupational Therapist with the Health Professions Council.
  • Continued Professional Development including evidence of reflective practice and clinical experience gained.


Experience

Essential

  • Completion of a core practice placement in a hospital or rehabilitation setting.


Desirable

  • Experience in any of the following clinical areas Elderly, General Medicine, Orthopaedics, Community rehabilitation


Skills

Essential

  • Clear demonstrable understanding of the OT process.
  • Working knowledge of functional and standardised assessment tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English language.
  • Good clinical reasoning skills.
  • Able to work harmoniously with a diverse workforce to deliver a quality service to people from different backgrounds.
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Flexible approach
  • Competent IT skills
  • Able to work at moderate to high levels of physical activity involving the delivery of manual therapy, therapeutic handling of patients and the assessment, demonstration and installation of adaptations and equipment.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Basic assessment of need and problem identification.
  • Basic goal setting, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  • Knowledge and experience of Perceptual functioning, Cognitive functioning, Psychological functioning, Activities of daily living
  • A clear understanding of evidence based practice.
  • An understanding of clinical governance and implications for Occupational Therapy services including experience of quality issues and audit.
  • Able to work within Trust's policies of data protection, equal opportunities and health and safety to meet the needs of patients.


Other

Essential

  • Considered options for travel in support of community-based rotations when visiting clients in own homes is required.


Desirable

  • Own transport (car/motorbike/bicycle)
