The East Genomic Laboratory Hub (East GLH) is one of seven hubs in the Genomic Medicine Service. The East GLH is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the largest biomedical research campus in Europe home to two NHS flagship trusts, multiple world-class research institutes, the University of Cambridge Medical School and a thriving biopharma ecosystem. CUH is investing in leading specialised services across the region - including building new Children's and Cancer hospitals - and fostering innovation in health science and medical research.

Delivering Cancer Genomics testing to 31 NHS Trusts, serving over 9m people, is complex and challenging. The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory is therefore pleased to be recruiting experienced Clinical Scientists who can work in Solid Cancer.

The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory is the lead laboratory of the East GLH. It is a busy workplace undergoing transformation. You will be able to analyse and report complex information to provide clinically relevant and timely reports to requesting clinicians.

You will join a dynamic establishment that is keenly developing its staff, making a real difference to patients who are benefitting from the latest genomic testing technology.

Main duties of the job

Analyse a range of solid cancer tests, including NGS panels and whole genome sequencing

Somatic variant interpretation

Deliver and maintain a high-quality diagnostic service to regional oncology services

Provide advice to clinicians and colleagues

Ensure the continuous improvement and development of laboratory services

Ensure the continued ISO:15189 compliance of the laboratory using the quality management system

Data and variant interpretation checking, and authorisation of solid cancer testing reports

Liaise with clinical teams and communicate results at Genomics Tumour Advisory Board meetings

Assist with Healthcare Scientist recruitment, training and supporting continual personal development

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• First degree in an appropriate biological science or equivalent qualification
• Master's Degree or externally assessed equivalent in Human Genomics, Molecular Pathology or similar
• Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council or final year STP Trainee
• Membership of relevant professional organisation (e.g. ACGS, AHCS, BSGM)

Experience

Essential

• Significant scientific work experience in a genomics/molecular laboratory
• Analysing genomic data and reporting genomics tests
• Working within an ISO:15189 accredited laboratory

Desirable

• Acting as a duty scientist or team leader

Knowledge

Essential

• To have a thorough knowledge of human genetics and/or cancer genetics
• To have a basic knowledge of typical laboratory operational procedures, quality management systems and problem solving techniques
• To have knowledge of analytical methods and processes used for reporting genomic test results

Desirable

• To have detailed knowledge of a specific disease area applicable to genomics
• Knowledge of the processes involved in examining cancer samples in a clinical laboratory

Skills

Essential

• Good attention to detail, and able to maintain intense concentration for a sustained period of time despite interruptions
• Good verbal and written communication including the ability to use Microsoft packages
• Excellent organisational skills
• Critically appraise scientific information to aid service delivery
• Able to organise and manage complex activities while providing leadership to a small team within the department

Desirable

• Able to conduct Research and Development activities
• Able to prepare and present scientific and clinical information at meetings or conferences
