We are pleased to be able to offer an exciting opportunity to join the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) Programme Team at Northampton General Hospital. In partnership with our chosen supplier, we have embarked on our digital excellence journey to implement a nationally-leading EPR system that will transform the quality of care for our patients and staff by having instantly accessible information using the latest mobile technology, reducing paper usage and utilising clinical decision support tools.

The EPR Transformation Specialist (fixed term or secondment, post holder) will play a pivotal role in the implementation of the Trust's EPR, supporting the transformation workstream to deliver transformational change within the organisation to achieve and realise the programme's benefits.


Main duties of the job

The primary purpose of this role is to drive transformation improvements in ways of working to enable delivery in the most efficient, meaningful and effective way. This will involve using change management and continuous improvement techniques to support scoping and delivery of the EPR PAS, assess organisational readiness, and enable deployment and transition into Business as Usual.

Job responsibilities

Transformation and Business Change

To identify as the point of escalation for all PAS transformation activities, to be communicated with the project manager.

To play a key role in the implementation of complex operational transformations and projects related to the implementation of Patient Administration System (PAS) Electronic Patient Record (EPR).

Analyse the impact of new processes on clinical areas, working closely with the PAS EPR project manager. This may include requirements for training, equipment or amendments to current job roles and responsibilities.

To work as part of the transformation team through all elements of change, including: mapping current ways of working designing and agreeing new ways of working planning and project management stakeholder engagement implementing change at the front-line.

Understand and mitigate complex issues that arise within the workstream.

Contribute to the successful delivery of all workstreams and support where required to ensure a successful EPR programme delivery.

Support the development and undertaking of operational readiness assessments. The post holder should also support with the design and post implementation reviews and lessons learnt, and transition to business as usual (BAU).

To respond to changing business requirements and use skills to support other areas of programme delivery as and when required.

Interpret national guidelines and policies and communicate and ensure alignment with project delivery.

Be responsible for their own projects or work streams within a project and to clarify the requirements. To work on such projects independently, or with support from colleagues.

Work collaboratively with teams across the organisation building effective working relationships to produce joint recommendations with colleagues on new ways of working, policies, strategic issues and new initiatives.

Manages project auditing and ensure lessons learned are recorded and enforced for best practice.


Communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively, verbally and in writing.

Communicate contentious and sensitive information appropriately.

Deliver highly complex presentations to various Trust level staff.

Communicate risks in escalation as required in an appropriate manner.

Persuade Board members to address best possible outcome.

Negotiate flexibly to ensure the best outcome for the patient and service staff.

Communicate effectively with staff at all levels, external service provider representatives, and peer NHS organisation representatives.

To ensure proactive and effective stakeholder engagement and communication across all levels of the organisation.

The post holder will need to develop and maintain their own knowledge of developments and legislation relevant to the service area and ensure that each function reflects current professional guidance and standards.

The post holder will take responsibility for his or her own professional development, identifying training and educational needs and agreeing ways of addressing these with the EPR Programme Manager.

Person Specification



  • Ability to coach, motivate and mobilise others
  • Ability to work well from a predominantly computer-based environment with use of VDU
  • Ability to independently structure, analyse and synthesise findings. Able to defend own perspective and support it with facts
  • Ability to assess and influence effective decision-making under pressure in complex situations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with professionals at all levels
  • Sound decision making and judgement skills
  • Comprehensive and significant evidence of programme and project management experience and delivery of benefits
  • Highly skilled in suite of Microsoft Office programmes, particularly powerpoint and excel. Evidence of proficiency in these programmes will be required at interview
  • Capacity to identify problems in order of importance and develop actions to address these including the ability to influence colleagues within the organisation
  • Proven track record of effectively managing and working as a part of a team as well as the ability to work autonomously
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage a large complex workload whilst delivering to tight deadlines

Educations, Training and Qualifications


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent level of education, training or experience


  • Evidence of continuous professional development or further study to postgraduate degree level or equivalent
  • Practitioner level qualification of a recognised Project or Change Management methodology (e.g. PRINCE2, LEAN)

Knowledge and Experience


  • Relevant and demonstrative experience in an operational management or business change role
  • Knowledge and understanding of Improvement methodology including change management and workforce and service (i.e. clinical) pathway redesign
  • Experience and knowledge of project management
  • Proven experience of delivering positive change in ways of working, either through transformation projects or through day-to-day frontline operational experience
  • In depth knowledge and experience of clinical change management, facilitation and service improvement tools and methods and their application to projects
  • Proven experience presenting information to a wide range of audiences with the ability to explain complex data to non-technical audiences
  • Proven experience presenting information to a wide range of audiences with the ability to present complex and contentious information in sometimes challenging circumstances and the ability to explain complex data to non-technical audiences
  • Proven significant experience of writing and ability to produce first class and high quality comprehensive business reports and written communications demonstrating analytical skills and ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner, highlighting and interpreting key themes and trends


  • Change management in the context or an EPR system implementation or upgrade
  • Experience in managing projects and leading others to accomplish difficult goals
  • Understanding of EPR implementation, the benefits this provides to a Trust, in addition to a wider knowledge of Digital healthcare
