We are seeking an innovative, experienced, highly motivated & enthusiastic Advanced Specialist Occupational Therapist to join the adult Specialist Health Community Learning Disability Teams across the cluster of Exeter & East.

The Specialist Health Community Learning Disability Service is comprised of MDTs clustered across the county of Devon, offering dynamic & friendly multi-disciplinary support for adults with a learning disability. This post has become available following service restructuring supporting career progression.

Occupational Therapy is an established & well-respected profession within the service. Our work is integral to the learning disability evidence-based care pathways including Behaviours of Concern, Dementia, Mental Health & Complex Physical Health. Occupational Therapy contribute to the formulation & planning of Positive Behaviour Support Plans, memory clinics, Reducing Restrictive Practice, stopping over medication of people with a learning disability (STOMP) & much more. We pro-actively work within the MDT contributing to care planning & risk management & have a strong role in supporting the development of capable environments for adults with a learning disability.

This role sits at cluster level within the service providing advanced specialist occupational therapy clinical skills & leadership to both occupational therapy & multi-disciplinary staff members across 2 MDTs (Exeter & East).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will hold a highly complex caseload across the cluster, alongside supporting occupational therapy staff (band 5, band 6, & OTTI/student OT apprentices) to triage & deliver timely OT assessment & intervention, focused on maximising health, wellbeing & quality of life outcomes, promoting active engagement in meaningful occupations in the local community.

Clinical supervision, Occupational Therapy leadership, & service development tasks will be undertaken alongside our Lead Occupational Therapists & further three Advanced Specialist Occupational Therapists (who are based across Devon). This group of Senior Occupational Therapists work alongside the Head of Profession for Occupational Therapy within the wider trust to innovatively lead & develop the Learning Disability Occupational Therapy Service.

We have excellent clinical leadership & supervision structures, hold regular Devon-wide Occupational Therapy meetings, facilitate regular CPD & learning opportunities, & link with AHPs across the wider trust. We actively seek trust wide, across directorate working, promoting clinical governance & peer supervision. This includes developing our evidenced based application of theoretical approaches & models of practice eg The Model of Human Occupation, the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability & Sensory Integration.

As this is an Advanced Specialist post the post holder will also be required to support the wider MDT across the cluster (Exeter and East).

Person Specification



  • Ability to travel throughout the geographical area covered by the Trust to meet the demands of the role



  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Clinical practice educator for student placements
  • Registered to practice by HCPC


  • MSc in Advanced Occupational Therapy
  • Working towards advanced practitioner status/MSc in sensory integration



  • Significant specialised experience working with people with severe/complex learning disability and additional sensory/health needs
  • Experience in the application of Occupational Therapy models to service users with complex needs
  • Significant experience working in community settings in multi disciplinary teams
  • Ability to manage a complex caseload and competing priorities

Knowledge & Skills


  • Highly developed knowledge of theory and practice of Occupational Therapy with people with a learning disability
  • An understanding of multi disciplinary and multi agency working across health and social care and with voluntary and independent sector
