We are excited to be recruiting for the role of Sustainability Officer to join our Sustainability Team at Newcastle Hospitals.

Newcastle Hospitals has a global reputation for sustainable healthcare leadership. We were the first to publicly declare the climate emergency as a health emergency and commit to fast-tracking the decarbonisation of our services in line with the Paris Agreement. The post holder will join an award-winning team of environmental sustainability professionals and help the Trust to deliver on our ambitious Climate Emergency Strategy goals. You will work closely with subject matter experts in energy management, net zero carbon estates, waste management, clean air, nature recovery, sustainable procurement and staff engagement.

We are seeking a highly motivated graduate with the knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability issues affecting large organisations backed up with relevant practical experience.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will work with the Energy Manager to support the wider Sustainability Team and achieve the aims set out in our board approved Climate Emergency Strategy and our Sustainable Healthcare in Newcastle (Shine) programme.

The successful candidate will have excellent analytical skills. They will assist in the management of energy, waste, water and carbon emission data from across our varied healthcare estate. This will include working with complex utilities and waste data sets to analyse, report and help target reductions (saving costs, carbon and improving patient care).

The post holder will lead on their own sustainability projects as well as supporting those undertaken by the wider team (the full breadth of environmental sustainability projects can be viewed online in our Annual Shine Reports).

The successful candidate will have excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written (including digital and social media skills), as the role plays a key part in our work to educate, engage and empower our staff to deliver care that is kind to patient and planet.

Job responsibilities

  • The Sustainability Team, within the Estates directorate, provides a support service to the Trust with the aim of innovatively reducing our impact on the environment, whilst simultaneously making our healthcare services more sustainable for future generations.
  • The purpose of the Sustainability Officer role is to assist in the management of energy, waste, water and carbon emissions throughout the Trust estate and that of our partner sites. This efficient management will lead to reduced usage/production, cost savings and an improved patient experience.
  • Provide support and assistance to the Waste Manager, Energy Manager, and the wider Sustainability Team, to achieve the aims set out in the Trusts Sustainable Healthcare Strategy and deliver sustainable healthcare at its very best - with a personal touch.
  • To ensure best practice in the delivery of sustainable healthcare services and to maintain the reputation of the Trust as an environmental sustainability leader within the NHS and beyond.
  • Work collaboratively as an effective member of the Sustainability Team and a key contributor to the multi-disciplinary Trust Sustainable Healthcare Committee.

Person Specification



  • oProven knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability issues affecting large, complex, organisations particularly efficient utility (energy & water) use, waste management and carbon reduction


  • oKnowledge of key NHS specific guidance on environmental sustainability issues i.e. HTM 07-01, HTM 07-02, HTM 07-04 and HTM 07-07



  • oExcellent analytical skills with the ability to work with, and manage, complex datasets
  • oExcellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written (including digital and social media)


  • oDemonstrable persuasive communication skills, with the ability to engage large numbers of staff in energy reduction/conservation actions



  • oExperience of environmental management/efficiency work, or environmental sustainability behaviour change campaigns/projects


  • oExperience of delivering environmental sustainability training to a wide-ranging audience from senior manager briefings to frontline staff 'tool-box talks'.
  • oExperience of environmental auditing and/or EMS implementation (i.e. ISO 14001/EMAS)
  • oExperience of working in an acute NHS hospital environment



  • oEducated to degree level, or equivalent, ideally in an environmental subject


  • oPost-graduate qualification, or formal training, in a subject relevant to the post
  • oAssociate Membership of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (AIEMA)
  • oCurrent full UK driving licence



  • oGood keyboard and IT skills, including proficiency in the use of standard MS Office software i.e. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.
