An exciting opportunity has arisen for aCapital and Technical Accountant (band 7 - pending evaluation) to join the Financial Accounting teamat East London Foundation Trust.

We are seeking an individual who is dedicated, motivated and pro-active with strong organisational and communication skills who will help us provide high quality care to our local communities in East London.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive capital accounting function to the Trust, ensuring our fixed assets are recorded accurately and promptly, and charges associated with capital are understood in planning and forecasting. They will also be responsible for ensuring the monthly VAT returns are completed and that VAT recovery is maximised.

Candidates must have previous experience in capital accounting within a large organisation and a strong understanding of accounting standards and NHS VAT regulations. Whilst NHS experience is desirable, this is not essential.

Person Specification



  • CCAB accounting qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development



  • At least 2 years' experience working in a financial accounting team for a large organisation
  • Experience maintaining a fixed asset register
  • Experience in using a large ledger package


  • Experience of working within the NHS



  • In depth, specialist knowledge of current accounting standards and other statutory financial legislation related to capital with an ability to interpret, advise and train finance and non-finance colleagues on what can be complex issues
  • In depth, specialist knowledge of NHS capital regimes.
  • Good understanding of NHS VAT regulations.
  • Planning and motivational skills to meet tight reporting deadlines when dealing with multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication skills, with an ability to express potentially contentious issues ideas clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to analyse, extract and present management information in a clear and concise way that highlights any areas of risk
