We are looking for an enthusiastic pharmacist to join our friendly, progressive pharmacy team, serving our community in Sheffield.

As a Senior Mental Health pharmacist, you will be responsible for leading medicines optimisation within the Early Intervention setting. As part of your overarching role you will also lead on Education and Training within the pharmacy department, with a focus on audit plus act as the pre-registration training manager.

In addition to the focus above, you will also provide specialist mental health pharmaceutical support across the trust to help achieve best outcomes with medicines.

There will be a requirement to undertake on call support out of hours.

The Candidate:

You must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council and have a keen interest in mental health pharmacy.

This is a specialist post and you must be able to demonstrate your ability to provide a high level of clinical pharmacy practice through possession of a relevant Pharmacy Post Graduate Clinical Diploma or equivalent.

You will be a pharmacist prescriber or working towards attainment of the qualification.

Looking to develop and embedding medicines optimisation in routine clinical practice.

Main duties of the job

  • As part of the pharmacy service, to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines throughout the Trust.
  • To be a specialist pharmacist working with the Early Intervention (EI) service.
  • To lead on medicine optimisation within EI and support other areas of pharmacy practice within the Trust.
  • To practice as a specialist pharmacist and pharmacist prescriber within EI and undertake face to face reviews as required. Also be responsible for evidencing competence in area of prescribing.
  • To lead on audit within the pharmacy department and lead on POMH audit across the organisation.
  • Delegated responsibility for pre-registration pharmacists (Manager and tutor).

We are also involved in the implementation of national guidelines and the development of local guidelines. The Trust participates in national audits, e.g. through the Prescribing Observatory for Mental Health (POMH UK), with pharmacists taking a lead role.

  • Lead on pharmacy audits and also the use of medicines in accordance with best practice, e.g. POMH.
  • Provide good and comprehensive specialist clinical pharmacy services to designated teams in order to ensure pharmacological treatment is in line with national standards and to achieve best outcomes with medicines.
  • Support the delivery of specialist clinical pharmacy services to other areas of the Trust.
  • Advise medical, nursing and other staff on pharmaceutical or therapeutic problems and promote the rational prescribing and use of medicines.
  • Participate in and support the development of departmental clinical medicines information systems and answer queries resulting from medicines use within the Trust.
  • In conjunction with other senior pharmacists, deputise for the Chief Pharmacist or deputy, as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain personal expertise in the use of medicines, to enable practise as a specialist pharmacist.
  • Work towards or continue membership of the College of Mental Health Pharmacy.
  • Review and advise on the management of service users receiving complex pharmacological treatments or not responding to existing treatments.
  • Monitor and advise on the pharmacological management of patients who fall outside of or are not covered by national guidance or guidelines.
  • Produce and review policies, guidelines and SOPs associated with the use of medicines within the Trust.
  • Participate in governance meetings within the pharmacy meetings and within designated community or in-patient team.
  • Responsibility for encouraging cost-effective prescribing of medicines.
  • Responsibility for monitoring medicines expenditure within area of responsibility.
  • There will be a requirement to undertake on call support out of hours.


  • Person Specification Training and qualifications Essential
    • Master's degree in Pharmacy (MPharm) or equivalent pharmacy degree
    • Non-medical prescriber or working towards attainment of the qualification.
    • Hold a relevant post-registration qualification such as Diploma in Mental Health Pharmacy, or Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.
    • Hold current registration as a Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
    Desirable
    • Membership of the College of Mental Health Pharmacy, or equivalent.
    • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)
    Knowledge and skills Essential
    • Have a high level of clinical pharmacy skills and knowledge and to be able to apply this to work in mental health
    • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of evidence-based healthcare
