Are you looking to develop further in your Dietetic career as a clinical specialist? Do you have extensive experience of working within the acute setting?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated dietitian to provide specialist acute dietetic services to the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board population, based at Prince Charles Hospital.

You will hold a complex clinical caseload of acute inpatients and be a key member of the wider multidisciplinary teams, ensuring optimised patient outcomes, service innovation and strategic development.

You will have knowledge and skills in complex nutrition support across general inpatient settings including stroke, surgery and gastroenterology.

As a senior member of the dietetic team, you will contribute to the day to day leadership of junior dietitians and support workers, encouraging and promoting their development and also to deputise for the Acute Team Lead Dietitian, Deputy Head of Service and Professional Managers. You will also be a lead student trainer, responsible for the coordination and development of training programmes as well as providing direct training to students.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is a clinical lead in acute nutrition support based in Prince Charles Hospital. This post will focus on delivering a quality, evidence based specialist nutrition support dietetic service to patients within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board Area.

To work autonomously managing a specialist complex and varied caseload of patients with complex nutrition support needs in addition to different clinical conditions, including stroke, complex surgery and gastroenterology identifying, planning and delivering highly specialist dietetic interventions demonstrating expertise in this area of clinical speciality.

To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by the use of evidence based outcomes.

Lead on specific clinical audit/research projects within area of speciality.

To provide leadership for junior staff and support staff and contribute to their development, as a delegated supervisor, and undertake annual performance review of junior staff.

To work in collaboration with ward multidisciplinary teams, identifying service improvements and taking forward developments in line with dietetic annual plan, and strategic developments of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

Act as a source of expertise to other colleagues working within and outside Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification



  • BSc. Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent.
  • Evidence of clinical supervision
  • Evidence of or qualification in research and audit.
  • Health and Care Professions Council registration (HCPC).
  • Evidence of professional development.
  • Relevant post registration training.
  • Understanding of professional ethics and their application in practice.
  • Detailed specialist clinical knowledge of acute nutrition support including oral, enteral and parental feeding routes.
  • MSc or its equivalent level of knowledge and advanced post graduate training/experience in specialist clinical dietetics.
  • Knowledge of audit and research and its application to acute nutrition support.
  • Knowledge of health and safety and clinical governance.
  • Knowledge of health issues affecting the local population and strategies in place to support improvement in these areas.


  • Clinical Educators Course.
  • Management qualification or evidence of management development
  • Member of BDA specialist group or equivalent specialist interest group e.g. PENG, BAPEN



  • Clinical experience in specialist acute nutrition support at a senior level.
  • Considerable experience with artificial nutrition within the acute hospital environment including specialist knowledge of feeding tubes.
  • Demonstrates evidence based specialist clinical knowledge.
  • Experience of working as part of a clinical team to deliver patient and organisational objectives
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit and or research.
  • Experience of clinical supervision of students and junior staff.
  • Experience of organising and implementing training programmes for staff, patients and students.
  • Practical experience of human resource management, supervision and mentoring.
  • Practical experience of lecturing/teaching/ presentations to large groups or at conferences.


  • Experience in operational management/leadership



  • Demonstrates highly developed motivational and negotiating skills to effect change
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to gather, assimilate, appropriately apply and present complex data information.
  • An ability to communicate complex information to NHS colleagues and partners in external organisations at a national and international level.
  • Clinical supervision skills.
  • Demonstrates critical appraisal skills.
  • Presentation skills and ability to work effectively single handed with individuals and groups over 20 people
  • Ability to focus on research and project objectives and to deliver on these
  • Able to maintain effective working relationships with relevant stakeholders.

  • Skills in influencing and persuasion on specialist clinical issues with a wide range of staff and internal and external to the UHB.
  • Ability to carry out accurate anthropometric measurements
  • Advanced keyboard skills - data inputting, word processing, internet and dietary analysis.
  • Adequate dexterity to set up intricate equipment and demonstrate usage of same e.g. enteral feeding pumps.
  • Able to deal appropriately with distressed patients and staff.


  • Ability to speak Welsh.
