We are looking for a substantive Band 6 Deputy Charge nurse for our Children's and Young Persons Emergency Department

The post holder will act as a deputy to the Children's Emergency Department Band 7 Team and be expected to gain substantial senior nurse management experienceThe post holder will be required to take charge of a busy Children's Emergency Department that sees over 40,000 children a year

Membership of the Faculty of Emergency Nursing (FEN) is encouraged, access to FEN continued professional development (CPD) webinars is supported and the opportunity to undertake FEN academically accredited units and qualifications is facilitated.

We are currently recruiting deputy charge nurses/sisters to join our friendly and committed Children's Emergency Department. For this we require motivated registered children's nurses, with substantial post registration experience in an emergency care setting. You will need excellent communication and organisational skills, and be ready to develop your leadership and management skills within a supportive, empowering department.

A comprehensive induction is offered to all new staff as well as continuing training and development supported by our DREEAM education team.

About us

NUH is the new home of 24 hours in A& E, as well as being a Major Trauma Centre covering the East Midlands. Our Children's Emergency Department sees over 40,000 patients per year and works closely with the Adult Emergency Department and the Children's Hospital. The emergency department is currently undergoing transformation and this will give opportunity to be involved in change management of our processes and working environment.

Job responsibilities

This requires the post holder to be a strong and motivated leader with a high level of clinical knowledge and experience.The role involves both clinical and non-clinical time to achieve Trust and National standards of care.The post holder will need to show a high level of commitment to the ongoing development of thepatient experience, whilst also ensuring the needs of the whole family.They will also be responsible for ensuring the health and wellbeing of staff in the department and recognise when further support may be needed.They will need to work flexibly as a member of the departmental team in support to the band 7 team.They will be expected to manage the department in absence of the departmental ward manager.

Training & Qualifications

Essential

  • oRSCN/RN Child Branch or RN adult within a dual emergency department and significant Paediatric experience
  • oTeaching & Assessing qualification or equivalent level of experience
  • oPossession of a mentor course
  • oCompetent in medicines management
  • oAPLS / EPLS certificate or equivalent
  • oContinuing professional development/reflective profile


Desirable

  • oEducated to degree level
  • oCompletion of NUH ED scopes of professional practice or equivalent local competency package
  • oFormal leadership and management training


Experience

Essential

  • oRSCN with post registration experience in an acute paediatric setting (Appropriate ward level experience with transferrable skills will be considered). Or a registered nurse with experience in a paediatric or shared adult/paediatric emergency department.
  • oSupervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and post basic students
  • oExperience of teaching & assessing
  • oEvidence of personal professional development


Desirable

  • oExperience of working in an area that has undergone change/modernisation.
  • oExperience in service improvement


Communication and relationship skills

Essential

  • oAbility to take charge of a busy Emergency department whilst adhering to Trust and National targets
  • oAble to work with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure high quality patient experience.
  • oDemonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • oProduce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents.
  • oDemonstrate computer literacy and use of IT skills e.g. emails PowerPoint and word
  • oRecognition of own level of competence and limitations and ability to communicate these to appropriate staff.
  • oAbility to constructively challenge others and formulate resolutions in conflict situations.

  • oHigh level of clinical knowledge and skill

  • oAssist the Sister/Charge Nurse to professionally develop a team of more junior staff by undertaking PDR's & training needs analysis
  • oDemonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • oAbility to contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans.


Desirable

  • oAPLS/PILS instructor status.


Physical skills

Essential

  • oPhysically able to perform the full range of nursing duties, including manoeuvring patients
  • oDexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation
  • oCompetent and capable of using medical equipment
  • oAble to undertake patient manual handling manoeuvres and non-patient manual handling manoeuvres
