This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to health improvements of adults and young people with a learning disability admitted to an acute assessment and treatment inpatient service for mental health and behavioural problems located in North West London.

We are looking for a conscientious, committed and dynamic GP to join our highly skilled and dedicated team of healthcare professionals to work within the service which consists of 2 wards, 1 is 7 bedded and 1 is 5 bedded.

Main duties of the job

The inpatient service at Kingswood Centre constitutes one 7 bedded unit (Carlton House) for Adults with learning disabilities and a 5 bedded unit (Crystal House) for Children with learning disabilities aged 13-17 years. The service currently admits between 10-15 new patients a year. There is a designated clinical team for each Unit who respond to urgent physical health needs of the service users on a day to day basis. Local acute hospital links include Northwick Park Hospital and Central Middlesex Hospital.

This post-holder will provide a GP service to all LD inpatient units at The Kingswood Centre.

The individual we are looking for will possess essential problem-solving qualities and team-working skills that will enable them to work constructively and cohesively with other healthcare professionals of the large multidisciplinary team at the Kingswood Centre.

You will have broad experience in Primary Care having worked in community and residential settings. We are also looking for a GP who has experience in working with people with a learning disability including implementing the framework of Direct Enhanced System (DES) which incorporates annual health checks for this population.

About us

The Trust manages an element of Learning Disability service across eight Boroughs. The Learning Disability Service provides an inpatient Assessment and Treatment service for adults and children (aged 13-17 years) at The Kingswood Centre in Kingsbury. The service is for people with a Learning Disability who have mental illness and/or behaviour disorders so challenging that the local services are unable to meet their needs. The Trust also manages three community LD health teams in Brent, Hillingdon and Harrow, and employs other members of Learning Disability health staff within the other boroughs.

We provide a range of specialist community and inpatient services to meet the needs of adults with learning disabilities who challenge services through behavioural or mental health difficulties, personality and autistic spectrum disorders and forensic issues.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide a Primary care medical service to service users with learning disability admitted to inpatient units at The Kingswood Centre.

Looking after routine physical health needs and providing advice for service users as referred by the treating team.

Comprehensive physical assessment for all new admissions with the completion of the Cardiff Health Check template and physical health assessment (or its equivalent) on System One.

Annual health checks for LD inpatients

Following assessment to arrange blood investigations and request other investigations as appropriate.

Documentation of assessment and treatment plan on Service Users electronic notes.

Referral to secondary care and appropriate follow up when required.

Feedback to the treating team when additional follow up from them is required.

Liaising /providing feedback to families/carers when appropriate.

Liaising with the patients own registered GP as needed.

Assessment of capacity to consent to physical investigations, as appropriate.

Attending multidisciplinary team meetings/best interest meetings or contributing remotely via written feedback for specific issues, where necessary.
The post-holder will be expected to make an active contribution to: Consultant liaison and consultation with other professionals within the Kingswood Centre Liaison with staff, families and other providers of services for people with learning disabilities admitted to the units, where appropriate. Attendance at service user reviews, clinical, service-related, clinical governance and multidisciplinary meetings as necessary

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications


  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council with a license to practice
  • GMC Specialist Register for General Practice
  • Active Membership of a medical defence organisation
  • Up to date with all mandatory training requirements
  • Up to date with appraisal


  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications

Clinical Experience


  • Experience of working independently
  • Experience of working with patient with mental health problems and learning disabilities


  • Experience with local referral pathways and systems
  • Experience of working as a GP in NWL

Skills and Knowledge


  • Ability to use IT, including clinical systems and MS Office
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Ability to appraise own performance as a clinician
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues


  • Experience of Systm One
