The Radiotherapy service is based at St Bartholomew's Hospital, a leading, internationally renowned teaching hospital situated within the City of London. The department offers an opportunity to work within a dynamic organisation using and developing the latest techniques and technologies.

We are looking to recruit an adaptable, experienced and motivated Therapeutic Radiographer to join our team and operate as a team leader in all areas of the department.

Treatment equipment comprises five Varian TrueBeam linacs, XStrahl orthovoltage unit and Gammamed HDR on the ARIA network complete the equipment portfolio.

Pre-treatment imaging is provided with a Siemens Somatom Confidence CT and planning with Varian Eclipse treatment planning system. Techniques include virtual simulation and delivery of simple and complex conformal treatments. IMRT, IGRT, TBI, DIBH, ART and gynaecological brachytherapy are currently offered as routine as well as multi-platform stereotactic radiosurgery & SABR. Further expansion of both pre-treatment and treatment delivery areas of the department is plann

The successful candidate will play a vital role in the department, ensuring that strong links are maintained between all sections and that knowledge and expertise is shared. The candidate will act as a role model to junior staff and students and be responsible for the daily operation of their section

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with the Pre-treatment & Treatment Operational Managers to ensure the delivery of the highest standards of care.

The post holder will be expected to play a key role in the operational and clinical leadership of the service within the Radiotherapy Department at the Barts Cancer Centre. They would be expected to ensure the provision of a high quality and patient-focussed service and to provide support to radiographers at all levels, assistants and students.

The post holder will be one of the team of Radiographers in the department providing leadership for staff and quality care for patients within the Barts Cancer Centre.

Person Specification



  • BSc (hons) in Therapeutic Radiography
  • HCPC registration in Therapeutic Radiography
  • Evidence of Post graduate education
  • Recent clinical updates


  • MSc module in Radiotherapy Breast Planning
  • Education to MSc level or equivalent knowledge in an area related to role



  • Experience of working in a Radiotherapy department on the treatment units and pre-treatment at B6 level or above level
  • Experience of CT imaging and Virtual Simulation for radiotherapy
  • Team management experience
  • Participation in radiotherapy project or development work


  • Experience of Varian/Aria equipment
  • Experience of using treatment planning systems.
  • Participation in research.
  • Participation in the implementation of a change in practice/new equipment.

Knowledge and skills


  • Knowledge and experience of advanced and complex treatment techniques
  • Core knowledge of the principles of radiotherapy treatment planning and radiation dosimetry as applied to radiotherapy treatments.
  • Excellent anatomical knowledge
  • Knowledge of legislation e.g. IR(ME)R 2000 and responsibilities relating to own professional practice
  • Understanding of CPD requirements of profession
  • A general understanding of computerised treatment planning systems.
  • Good CT image interpretation skills including a detailed understanding of CT and CBCT image acquisition and how to improve image quality
  • Good technical skills and manual dexterity
