Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to be part of an ever developing gastroenterology team who prides its self on patient centred care?

If so, our position of Senior Gastroenterology and Nutrition Support Dietitian at University Hospitals Birmingham (Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull) is the one for you!

We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible and enthusiastic dietitian to join our team. We provide inpatient and outpatient dietetic support in a range of specialities including nutrition support, parenteral nutrition, critical care and surgery.

You would be joining a large, friendly and supportive dietetic department that covers a variety of specialities. We are committed to supporting the ongoing personal and professional development of our staff and offer excellent training and development opportunities.

This is a fantastic time to join our team as we continue to develop and expand our service provision. We are currently exploring the development of advanced dietetic practice roles within our team including insertion of nasal bridles/nasogastric tubes, supplementary prescribing and are involved in development of various in site working group pathways such as enteral nutrition, dysmotility, parenteral nutrition and eating disorders.

Main duties of the job

This post provides an exciting opportunity to gain experience in a diverse range of gastroenterology conditions including HPB, IBD, IBS including FODMAPs, coeliac disease, GI dysmotility, complex enteral nutrition, upper and lower GI surgery, critical care and parenteral nutrition. The role will include acute ward cover, outpatient clinics (dietetic and MDT clinics), attending Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and providing educational talks (to patients and staff).

In addition to the clinical aspects of the role, the post-holder will also be responsible for training dietetic placement students and dietetic assistants, supervising band 5 rotational dietitians, taking part in audits and clinical supervision/reflection.

You will be joining a busy team therefore excellent communication skills and a high standard of organisation and time management are essential for the role.

We also encourage extending our scope of dietetic practice and are keen to explore how some of these aspects can be incorporated into the role.

Person Specification



  • * Degree in dietetics or equivalent
  • * Current State Registration with HCPC



  • * Demonstrates clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients with complex needs in gastroenterology/surgery. This would usually be approximately 12 months.
  • * Demonstration of clinical experience of working with patients within speciality
  • * Ability to work as part of multidisciplinary team and dietetic team
  • * Understanding of audit, clinical effectiveness and its importance in the provision of a quality service
  • * Awareness of local needs, eg ethnic minority and low income groups
  • * Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • * Evidence of presentations to groups
  • * Work in line with HCPC standards and BDA code of conduct
