HMP Cardiff is a category B prison holding male adult prisoners on remand or those sentenced to less than two years. The men in our care are mainly drawn from the South East Wales region. The operational capacity is circa 800.

The Healthcare team based at the Cardiff Prison, is an holistic health service managed by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board providing access to essential services for the Individuals in our care. Following a period of development over the past eighteen months, which had resulted in investment and service redesign, the Primary, Community and Intermediate Care Clinical Board (PCIC) are currently seeking an highly motivated, experienced nurse leader for a Senior Nurse position within Cardiff prison the South & East Cardiff Locality.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will require a high level of competence to support the Clinical Director and Head of healthcare in ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of care to individuals with very complex needs providing professional leadership, advice and support to healthcare professionals within the prison and also to the Locality Management team. They will operationally line manage and also be able to support and develop our the Healthcare team to respond effectively to the changing agenda to ensure our services are fit for purpose and delivered in an innovative manner.

The service provides patients with initial health screening and signposting, access to immediate and necessary healthcare. The service works at the interface with GP practices, the third sector as well as Home Office Services.

The post holder will need to work at pace, enjoy the challenge associated with managing complexity, and the opportunities associated with working as part of a large specialist multi-disciplinary team. Key skills and experience required includes resilience, ability to problem solve, ability to communicate effectively with staff of all grades, and a proven track record in terms of effective staff management. As well as linking provision of holistic care together during periods of custody and to plan for release.

Qualification

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with NMC
  • Masters level of education in relevant field


Desirable

  • Project management qualification
  • registration as an independant medical prescriber


Experience

  • Clinically credible with experience of multidisciplinary working
  • Successful management of chance and service modernisation

  • Formal project management
  • Service improvement experience
  • Management experience within a secure setting
