The North Yorkshire and York Perinatal Mental Health Team are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Mental Health Practitioner (Band 6). We are a specialist service that strives to deliver excellent standards of care to expectant and new mothers with severe and complex mental health problems.

We are looking for a highly motivated mental health practitioners with an interest in perinatal mental health, however further specialist training and supervision will be provided to the successful candidates We are looking to recruit practitioners from a variety of backgrounds including Registered Mental Health Nurses (RMN), Occupational Therapists (OT) and/or Social Work.

We are seeking those with experience of assessment and safety management of service users within the community, this includes excellent communication skills with a detailed knowledge of safeguarding procedures. You will also have knowledge of interventions, including psychological interventions to support our mothers, babies, and families. The post holder will be based at North Moor House in Northallerton and will predominantly work across Hambleton & Richmondshire and will support the clinical leadership in the development of the service to meet the perinatal ambitions within the NHS Long Term Plan over the coming years.

Main duties of the job

Promotes and maintains safety, privacy and dignity of all patients.

Acts, wherever applicable, in accordance with the Mental Health Act and associated policies and procedures. Responsible for recognising the potential for or signs of patient harm, abuse or neglect, including poor clinical practice, reporting all such concerns and taking all reasonable steps to protect the patient.

Responsible for ensuring the highest professional standards and attitudes at all times.

Provides clinical advice on complex issues to other members of the clinical team and staff from other agencies.

Undertakes risk assessments in accordance with the Trust's Clinical Risk Assessment and Management Policy.

Where professionally appropriate may be responsible for the safe transport and administration of medicines in accordance with Trust policy.

Supports individual patients and their families/carers in the community.

Responsible for decision making and coordination in a crisis situation.

Demonstrates safe breakaway techniques in the management of violence and aggression as required.

Attends Mental Health Act tribunals & child safety Meetings

Participates in the duty rota as required.

Nursing applicants should already hold NMC registration and have successfully completed their preceptorship programme. Please note: Newly qualified Nurses or those due to qualify will be recruited via a separate process.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current professional registration with an approved professional body.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • For registered nurses: MIP, FLIP, ENB 998 Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice or City & Guilds 730 Teaching in Adult Education. Must be achieved within agreed timescale.
  • Recognised sign-off mentor, clinical educator or equivalent. Must be achieved within agreed timescale.
  • Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)


Desirable

  • Leadership or management qualification
  • Post-graduate qualification in a relevant area


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience working with people with mental ill health in a care environment.
  • Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers.
  • Providing clinical supervision to individuals or groups as professionally appropriate.
  • Mentoring or facilitating students on practice placement.


Desirable

  • Leadership or management experience
  • Significant experience working with people with mental ill health in a community environment.


Knowledge

Essential

  • Demonstrable knowledge to post-graduate level of evidence-based practice in caring for patients in the designated field.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act).
  • Care Programme Approach and its application in practice.
  • Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice.


Desirable

  • Understanding of Perinatal Mental Health
  • Knowledge of psychological wellbeing interventions
