An opportunity has arisen in the West Midlands Cancer Alliance (WMCA) to join this, high profile and busy team. As a Senior Project Manager, you will work as part of a dynamic team that provides support and expertise to help the Integrated Care Systems (ICS's), West Midlands Cancer Alliance and NHS England direct commissioners deliver their plans. As senior project manager you will be responsible for leading and managing projects that contribute to the delivery of the National Cancer Programme priorities within the NHS Long-Term Plan. The role will initially focus on the priority cancer pathways, and you will be asked to be the go to expert on your priority pathway areas of work.Preference will be given for individuals with a strong operational and service improvement background in the NHS and preferably cancer services.

Main duties of the job

As Senior Project Manager you will be responsible for leading and managing projects that contribute to performance and pathway improvement that result in improved outcomes for patients. Working closely with WMCA and system colleagues you will enable the delivery of operational and transformational programmes within an agreed portfolio of work. Duties will include:

- Ensure effective relationships with a range of stakeholders with particular emphasis on Providers.

- Manage projects and programmes within Cancer Alliance Programme, providing leadership and direction to ensure delivery.

- Plan and execute engagement with clinicians to understand the case for change, support the development and delivery of plans to provided better outcomes for patients).

- Monitor and establish the overall progress of the transformation programmes to ensure delivery with agreed timescales.

The West Midlands Cancer Alliance (WMCA) is one of twenty-one Cancer Alliances across England, one of the largest Alliances in the country. WMCA covers a large geographical area of 6 counties: Birmingham and Solihull, Coventry and Warwickshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, The Black Country and Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent. The West Midlands Cancer Alliance team is hosted at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust working across the wider West Midlands footprint. This role requires regular travel across the Midlands and the team meet face to face in Central Birmingham once a fortnight.

Cancer Alliances were set-up to deliver the collective ambitions identified by the National Cancer Taskforce, with the aim of increasing survival rates across the area and the experience of those living with and beyond cancer, ensuring that we address inequalities and improve patient experience wherever possible. We do this by bringing together all the organisations which commission, provide, and contribute to cancer services across our area to enable quality improvement.

Person Specification



  • Educated to master's level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
  • Programme Management Qualification (Managing Successful Programmes or similar)



  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas acquired through post graduate diploma or equivalent experience or training plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master's level equivalent.



  • Must have an understanding of the National Cancer Programme and the NHS Long Term Plan



  • Experience of building and maintaining effective working relationships
