An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, forward thinking Specialist Doctor within Microbiology to join our existing team to further develop the clinical microbiology and infection prevention service at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM).

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work as part of a team of five Consultant Medical Microbiologists across the NMCPS network providing clinical medical microbiology, antimicrobial management and infection prevention and control services for the Trust, surrounding GPs and wider service users. It is envisaged the posts will allow for the provision of a greater ward presence within the Trusts and to bring expertise in infection management nearer to the point of admission to ensure the appropriate and cost effective use of laboratory services, to strengthen the Trusts antimicrobial stewardship strategy as well as supporting infection prevention and control initiatives.

The NMCPS infection sciences lab based at RSUH process approximately 1,200,000 requests per year. The laboratory is UKAS accredited and provide comprehensive clinical service covering bacterial, viral, fungal and molecular investigations across the NMCPS network and the wider local health economy.

Person Specification



  • Registration (and with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Mb ChB or evidence of equivalent qualification
  • Dip RCPath in microbiology or evidence of equivalent qualification


  • FRCPath in Microbiology
  • Evidence of additional qualification relevant to Microbiology and Infection Control

Clinical Experience


  • Completed at least 12 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on part time basis) or have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • At least 6 years' experience in a relevant specialty.
  • Clinical experience of at least 1 year in medical/ surgical specialties. > 2 years' NHS experience in all aspects of Clinical Microbiology and the ability to work at higher specialist trainee level.
  • -Evidence of foundation competencies or equivalent and previous clinical work in infectious diseases/ medical microbiology in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including-Evidence of foundation competencies or equivalent and previous clinical work in infectious diseases/ medical microbiology in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including -Good clinical care -Good relationships and communication with patients -Good working relationships with colleagues -Good teaching and training -Professional behaviour and probity -Delivery of good clinical care -Maintaining good medical practice
  • Ability to offer appropriate advice for the investigation and management for adult and paediatric infection referrals
  • Ability to offer clear comprehensive clinical documentation for all consultations
  • Ability to offer safe infection control advice in response to urgent issues Ability to follow laboratory and clinical protocols
  • Knowledge of UK PHE requirements for notification of infectious diseases Understands laboratory quality management and clinical governance Experience in clinical audit


  • Experience of training in microbiology or in infection control
  • Evidence of research or innovative service developments
  • Experience of antimicrobial stewardship practices
