We are looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking Pharmacy Technician to join us supporting the elective surgical ward following the opening of the new Elective Hub at Solihull Hospital.

Main duties of the job

You will be a ward-based Pharmacy Technician working independently to support patient flow on the elective surgical ward. This will include medicines reconciliation, ward-based dispensing, and patient counselling.

As the role develops you will take on more roles traditionally undertaken by Pharmacist, including clinically screening inpatient drug charts and TTOs for a defined group of patients.

There will be scope for this role to have input into pre-assessment services.

You will participate in general Pharmacy Technician duties in the wider department including dispensary and checking duties as appropriate. You will also participate in late night, weekend, and Bank Holiday rotas.

Person Specification



  • Must have the following:
  • * Professional Registration with the GPhC.
  • * Dispensing Accuracy Accreditation. West Midland's scheme or equivalent.
  • * Evidence of Continued Professional Development.
  • * Accredited Checking Technician (National Framework) or equivalent. Plus, one of the following:
  • * Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians
  • OR
  • * BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science and Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills
  • OR
  • equivalent as defined by the General Pharmaceutical Council



  • * Significant post-qualification experience in a hospital setting as a registered Pharmacy Technician or the ability to demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge and the relevant practical experience for the post.
  • * Experience of the specialist function for area of responsibility
  • * Experience of organising other grades of staff and their workload
  • * Experienced in working to policies and procedures.
  • * Significant experience within a hospital pharmacy setting
  • * Understanding of Good Distribution Practice (GDP)
  • * Health and Safety at Work and COSHH
  • * Understanding of dispensing, stock control, supply, and I.T systems and processes
  • * Knowledge of Code of Practice / Customer Care
  • * Knowledge of medicines, side effects and where to find further information.
  • * Knowledge of practices, policies and procedures associated with the job.
  • * Understands the need for delivering a cost-effective service and the required work practices to reduce waste.
