This is an excellent opportunity to develop Mental Health Clinical Psychology Services within a new prison.

You will be based at HMP Berwyn. HMP Berwyn is being developed with a strong rehabilitative culture at its heart. All Health and Wellbeing services at HMP Berwyn are provided by BCUHB NHS Trust. A fully integrated health and wellbeing team has been established incorporating Primary Care, Mental Health & Learning Disability, Substance Misuse, Pharmacy, Therapies and Dentistry. You will be working with a large team of health care professionals.

We are looking for a talented, organised, and suitably experienced Clinical Psychologist. The successful candidate will have proven clinical and leadership competencies, excellent organisational skills and an ability to problem solve multiple issues within a fast-paced custodial context. We are looking to develop a model of clinical psychology that is responsive to the needs of the clients, the environment and responsive to the systems working with men in prison.

Main duties of the job

The post offers good continuing professional development opportunities with access to training and supervision. Supervision is provided in a range of models including access to mentalisation therapy (with an independent accredited supervisor), cognitive behaviour therapy (within BCUHB) and cognitive analytic therapy (North Wales peer supervision).

You must have:
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Psychologist.
  • Post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS.
  • Significant experience in mental health work.

Please note that any offer of employment will be subject to the successful receipt of enhanced DBS and prison vetting clearances.

Person Specification



  • Honours degree in Psychology
  • Post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the British Psychological Society
  • Registration with Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Psychologist.


  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice



  • Substantial assessed experience of working as a qualified and senior clinical psychologist, normally including significant post-qualification experience within the designated speciality where the post is located, or relevant transferable skills.
