We are looking for a Children's Diabetes Dietitian (Band 6). This is a great opportunity to develop paediatric diabetes knowledge and skills as part of a large multidisciplinary children and young people's diabetes team. Our service is one of the largest clinics in England providing care for children and young people with diabetes (aged 0-19 years), with a strong focus on the use of diabetes technology in the delivery of care. The children's diabetes dietitians are embedded within the CYP Diabetes Team.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities for this post include

Working as an integral part of the diabetes MDT to provide dietetic education and support for children and young people with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes from diagnosis through to transition to adult services.

Management of in patients, multidisciplinary outpatient clinics, dietetic led outpatient clinics and joint working with nursing and clinical psychology team at UCLH.

The post holder will have opportunities to develop diabetes management skills using insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring as part of hybrid closed loop systems. Training and clinical supervision will be provided by the team. This post is an opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic dietitian to develop clinical skills in the management of children and young people with diabetes.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Qualifications


  • Four year degree in Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent
  • HCPC registered


  • Member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) or equivalent association
  • Post registration training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
  • Post graduate study in specialist area of dietetics e.g. paediatric modules



  • Post registration clinical experience in paediatrics and/ or adolescents
  • Clinical experience in paediatrics and adolescent diabetes services
  • Involvement in relevant specialist interest group

Quality and service improvement


  • Experience of service development



  • Sound verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience of multidisciplinary teamwork
  • Awareness of need for confidentiality and issues of consent
  • Proven experience of communicating to affect change in children and adolescents

Personal and people development


  • Experience of training student dietitians/other HCPs


  • Experience in the support and development of junior members of staff
  • Teaching on degree (or higher level) / professional course

oInformation collection and analysis including IT skills


  • Anthropometry skills
  • Experience of conducting audit and/or research, including the ability to analyse and interpret statistics
  • Computer literacy

  • Knowledge & understanding of clinical governance and risk management and relevance to dietetics

Other requirements


  • To manage the physical effort of working between hospital sites, frequently moving up and down stairs, standing for long periods of time and carrying heavy folders.
