A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Finance Team as Finance Manager (Research & Development) supporting the Trust's Research & Development function.

As a CCAB qualified accountant, you will have significant post qualification experience and proven finance business partnering experience. Previous experience of NHS R& D finance is desirable, although not essential. Your key attributes will include communication, leadership, planning, costing and analytical skills.

This is a key role within the R& D team and will provide leadership both the annual business planning process and monthly financial reporting. Additionally, the role will lead on the financial aspects of external R& D reporting.

The individual appointed will lead a team four providing financial support covering all aspects of R& D finance.

Main duties of the job

Act as an expert in the highly specialised area of R& D Finance.

Ensure senior managers within the R& D Directorate and other finance staff within the trust adhere to the rules regarding R& D funding.

Shape the development and direction of the R& D finance team.

Be responsible for preparing the monthly finance reports and forecasts for the directorate, and presenting these within the directorate and to more senior staff.

Lead on the accurate provision of costings for research grant applications.

Person Specification



  • Hold a professional CCAB accountancy qualification (preferably, CIPFA, CIMA, ACCA) .



  • Experience in applying the following accounting concepts - budgeting, financial planning, costing, variance analysis, financial reporting.


  • Experience of R& D finance within an acute setting.



  • Highly developed level of interpersonal skills that enable highly complex, technical issues to be explained in clear and concise terms to non-finance managers.
