We are actively seeking a dynamic clinically experienced Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) who is enthusiastic about prescribing effectiveness and quality. If you are highly motivated and forward thinking and would like to develop and support the advancement of prescriber practice education, while ensuring governance assurance of prescribers and prescribing across the Trust, then this role would be an ideal opportunity.

The post holder will play a crucial part, as part of the trust Medicines Management Service, leading the DHC Prescribing Academy, a renowned local foundation model for prescribers, built on nationally accredited prescribing frameworks and the principles of patient safety. The Academy, which is currently undergoing digital transformation with the aim of improving oversight of registration processes and co ordinating prescribing rights, uses its members as a resource to underpin prescribing assurance through individual portfolio development, Trust-wide prescribing competency and skill through education.

Employment in this post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will cover the cost of. Applicants who subscribe to the DBS update service are able to present a valid DBS certificate instead of requiring a new check.

Main duties of the job

The NMP Lead role has recently been acknowledged and recognised for the promotion of multi-disciplinary advanced practice, prescribing competence, quality, and safety. This role is pivotal to community based integrated service design and delivery, through links with the advanced practice development forums and via enhanced networking. The role will continue to lead a programme of specifically designed CPD, conferences and learning events. In addition, the NMP Lead role is engaged and actively encouraged to share and provide expert prescribing knowledge and to contribute within a variety of Medicines Management related operational and clinical services and groups within the Trust, as well as across Dorset incorporating the regional and national prescribing agenda.

Independent prescribing is one of the few national professionally annotated qualifications, and as such, the postholder will be able to continue to develop expertise build on education and learning services, to identify opportunities for NMPs, facilitate the selection of appropriate candidates for trust sponsored NMP course places and participate in the prescribing and learning agenda linking with local academic course providers and Universities. The NMP Lead role will also be expected to be an active supporter and facilitator of future trainee prescribers along with the expansion of Designated Prescribing Practitioners, assessors, clinical supervisors, within the wider medicines learning environment.

Person Specification

Knowledge, Skills and Training


  • Registered healthcare practitioner
  • Relevant full Masters degree
  • Registered non-medical prescriber
  • Evidence of recent evidence based professional development in an up to date portfolio demonstrating leadership, education and service development achievements including links to national work and standards
  • Clear and demonstrable evidence of advanced, autonomous practice in the management of patients / service users
  • Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice

Job specific experience


  • Evidence of relevant leadership in meeting clinical governance objectives
  • Evidence of proactive involvement in the supervision and development of members of the multi-disciplinary team and able to demonstrate changes of practice through these
  • Able to demonstrate wide knowledge of health policy and its application in practice and evidence of developing involvement in influencing local and national standards and Medicines Policy
  • Evidence of education and training in practice
  • Evidence of involvement in the development of programmes of care, protocols and audit
  • Evidence of involvement in policy and practice change
  • Evidence of publication in healthcare arena
  • Evidence of research involvement

Managerial/supervisory experience


  • Able to undertake clinical supervision and systematic peer caseload review of colleagues on an individual or group basis
  • Previous experience of day-to-day first line management of staff


  • Previous experience of the full range of line management responsibilities, including attendance management, discipline and grievance, management of recruitment & selection, personal and career development. Able to demonstrate evidence of active Prescribing

  • Effective communicator able to communicate highly and complex and sensitive information where there may be barriers to understanding
  • Able to work independently
