Band 7 - Lead Clinical Services Pharmacy Technician

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled, innovative and enthusiastic senior clinical technician to join our Pharmacy Clinical Services Team.

The Pharmacy department within West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is located on two sites and has over 100 staff, with the main Pharmacy department based at Watford General Hospital.

The department provides a stimulating, friendly and professionally rewarding environment for staff to develop their clinical expertise.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required:

o To Line manage all clinical technicians and ensure adequate cover is provided on all wards.

o To support manager in planning, organisation and developing the medicines optimisation services on wards

o To implement, maintain and participate in medicines optimisation initiatives. This includes: medicines reconciliation, storage of medicines in patients' bedside lockers, use of patients own drugs, ensure sufficient supply of medicines and counsel patients

o To lead and participate in the development of near patient dispensing services within the Trust to provide an efficient discharge process

o To lead and deliver training and assessing competencies of clinical pharmacy technicians, rotational technicians and other health care professionals in the medicines optimisation process

o To develop policies and procedures in area of responsibility

o To initiate and undertake audits in liaison with senior clinical pharmacists

o To act as an accredited final checker in the dispensary and on wards

Job responsibilities

We provide opportunities for education and training and support continuing professional education.
  • To be aware of the confidential nature of the work of the department and respect the need for confidentiality.
  • To comply with Pharmacy and other Trust policies.
  • To undertake Trust mandatory training as advised by Deputy Chief Pharmacist.
  • To report any drug errors detected to your line manager and ensure that the appropriate Datix incident report form is completed.
  • To follow COSHH regulations including those for the safe handling of cytotoxic products.
  • To maintain the security of the pharmacy department and ensure the safe custody of all pharmacy keys in your possession both on and off sites.
  • To participate in late duty, weekend, Bank Holiday and other departmental rotas.
  • To participate in other aspects of delivery of the pharmacy service if required to do so.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties within the framework of the post as directed by the Deputy Chief Pharmacist or the Chief Pharmacist.
  • In some cases this job description may be modified to concentrate experience in one or more of those areas covered.
  • All employees are individually responsible for the prevention and control of infection within their own area. The employee must attend Infection Control Induction training and mandatory Infection control training. The employee must follow all, Trust policies, procedures and guidelines relating to Infection Control.


Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • BTEC certificate in applied sciences/NVQ level 3 in pharmacy services or equivalent.
  • Accredited technician checking qualification.
  • Accreditation in Medicines Management (or equivalent).
  • Completion of a recognised leadership/management course and/or relevant experience in managing staff and resources.
  • Registered with GPhC as a technician.

  • Knowledge and experience of recording data, including sensitive information, on pharmacy computerised data record systems.
  • Experience in organising daily activities of staff within a team.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of other health care professionals.
  • Experience of providing training.
