The Trust has an exciting opportunity for a full time band 5 Respiratory Nurse to join the Respiratory Nursing team at DBTH.We are looking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic Nurse who has experience working in respiratory medicine, in particular working with patients with a diagnosis of Asthma, COPD and other non-malignant respiratory conditions with a desire to learn more about pleural disease and management. They must possess excellent communication skills, work effectively within a team, whilst demonstrating self-leadership and the ability to liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.The successful applicant will be expected to work alongside the lead pleural specialist nurse to provide a specialist nursing service for patients with pleural disease and will contribute to the care of patients requiring pleural procedures including: chest drains, pleural aspirations, Indwelling pleural catheters and Medical Thoracoscopy. The post holder will assist the co-coordination, delivery of care and follow up for patients undergoing pleural procedures to ensure continuity throughout the patients care pathway. This will include collaboration with the lung cancer nurses in supporting new and follow-up patient with lung cancer.

Main duties of the job

To act as a resource for adult respiratory patients. To assess individual physical and psychological needs and observing the principles of holistic care when planning treatments.

To work autonomously, and as part of the wider respiratory team in collaboration with the hospital and community based respiratory nurses

Use relevant training, knowledge and expertise to clinically assess and deliver evidence based care through education and advice on self-management

Inpatient Asthma and COPD reviews and offering advice for outpatient enquiries following discharge

To recognise inpatient needs for long term oxygen therapy. Liaise with oxygen providers, MDT members and community oxygen service, as well as supporting the prescription and ordering of equipment for respiratory and palliative patients

Co-ordination and delivery of the pleural service alongside the respiratory consultants and lead pleural nurseMaintain stock levels and prepare procedure rooms

Take ownership of the pleural database and procedure lists

Collaborate with the lung cancer nurses in supporting new and follow-up lung cancer patients with pleural effusion.

Recognition of appropriate patients for virtual ward within the Trust

Referral of respiratory patients to other health professional, voluntary organisations and support groups as appropriate

Act as a resource for training and development of nursing and medical staff

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Desirable

  • Involvement in quality improvement projects
  • Previous experience assisting with pleural procedures


Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Must possess or be willing to work towards a Diploma/Degree level qualification in Asthma and COPD and have awareness and understanding of current guidelines specific to Asthma and COPD management
  • Current NMC Registration


Desirable

  • Extended nursing skills

Essential

  • Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills with multi-disciplinary team / client / relatives.
  • Able to accommodate the demands of the post with flexible working as required and good attendance.
  • Can work autonomously, and as part of the wider respiratory team in collaboration with the hospital and community based respiratory nurses
  • Precise and methodical in working practice and able to work under own initiative.
