Advanced Biomedical Scientist - training officer (Haematology)

The Role:

This post is based at Croydon University Hospital Clinical Blood Sciences Laboratory (CBS) however the post holder may be required to work at any of the South West London Pathology sites as and when necessary.

The Croydon University Hospital CBS Laboratory provides integrated service for Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry using state of the art equipment located in an open space environment. Laboratory tests that require quick turnaround time (< 4hrs) are processed on site by a combined total of 50 technical staff (Bands 3 - 8b) processing an approximate workload of 600-700k tests per year.

The laboratory operates a 24/7 shift system. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the out-of-hours rota once fully trained in haematology and blood transfusion.

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Biomedical Scientist - Training officer in our combined Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments.

The department is equipped with Beckman Coulter DxH900 analysers for Haematology, ACL TOP 550 for Coagulation with AutoMate 1200 for pre/post sample analytics and Immucor Neo Iris a fully automated equipment for Blood Transfusion services.The department operates a 24hr shift system, ISO 15189 accredited and has IBMS approval for pre and post registration training for biomedical scientist.

Youmust be a HCPC registered with a minimum of 5 years post registration experience in haematology laboratory. You must have a relevant MSc degree or HSD or FIBMS, and have a sound theoretical and practical knowledge in all areas of haematology including blood film reviews. Experience in blood coagulation and Blood transfusion would be an advantage.

You will be expected to deliver departmental training and competency assessments within the given time frame. You will be expected to support staff through registration and post-registration IBMS portfolios. Proven experience in staff training programs will be an advantage.

You will be expected to work collaboratively with senior staff in haematology/blood transfusion, and SWLP haematology network lead to maintain haematology services and ensuring compliance with ISO15189. CPD (internal and external) support and protected work time will be provided as required for your role.

The successful applicant will beexpected to:
  • have experience in routine haematology service provision with extensive films review experience
  • The ability to provide advanced technical support
  • Routine Blood coagulation service provision experience, although training will be provided.
  • You will be expected to cross train in blood transfusion techniquesto be able to provide cover as part of our contingency planning.
  • oversee training programmes and competence assessments for our multidiscipline workforce and placement students.
  • Supervise IBMS registration and specialist portfolio programs, as well as support for MSc programmes.
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience laboratory Quality Management Systemsand ISO 15189 accreditation
  • Experience work force management and leadership
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail and accuracy.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training


  • oMSc or equivalent specialist experience at Masters level
  • oHCPC Registration
  • oHold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience


  • oFellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
  • oRelevant trainer qualification

Knowledge and Experience


  • oProven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline
  • oExcellent working knowledge of all aspects of specialist subject in relevant discipline
