An opportunity has arisen for a Net Zero Officer to work in the Energy and Environment Department to support the delivery of our net zero agenda and trustwide sustainability initiatives.

Main duties of the job

To help the Energy and Environment Department (E& E Department) implement a Trust-wide approach to Net Zero and sustainability issues.

Assist the E& E Department in the implementation of policies and strategies that will achieve national, local and trustwide Net Zero and sustainability targets including the elements of Carbon Footprint, Energy, Water, Waste, Travel and Transport, Procurement and Green Space and Biodiversity.

Provide on-going support to the E& E Department to ensure compliance with legislation, codes of practice and sector guidance.

Liaising with staff and suppliers to collate, analyse and interpret data, assisting the E& E Department managers to make recommendations to improve the sustainability of the Trusts service provision.

Assist the Environmental Manager in retaining accreditation to ISO14001:2015 by undertaking site based environmental audits across the trust's portfolio.

Provide support to the E& E Department with the development of schemes/bids/business cases for obtaining local and central funding.

Support with delivery of projects relating to Net Zero and sustainability.

Support the E& E Department to deliver engagement and communication initiatives.

Champion the Net Zero and sustainability agenda, driving forward the Trusts green credentials.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Assist the E& E Department in ensuring compliance with statutory legislation, health & safety, Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), Codes of Practice etc.

Contribute to and support the maintenance of systems for collation, interpretation and analysis of Net Zero and sustainability data.

Carry out site-based audits to assess performance in line with ISO14001:2015 procedures, identifying corrective actions and reviewing and monitoring and supporting the close out of corrective actions.

To assist in ensuring that the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) accreditation is maintained.

To carry out the duties placed on employees by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and all statutory duties appertaining to their sphere of work.

To support the delivery of the E& E department training portfolio and participate in internal and external events to share best practice. Assist the E& E Department in promoting the Trusts network of Green Champions to drive ownership and continual environmental improvement.

To support delivery of the E& E Departments engagement and communication commitments including contributing to monthly newsletters, social media platforms, E& E Department intranet pages, Green Pods and associated internal and external events.

Assist the E& E Department to provide ongoing support and information to participating Green Impact teams.

To attend and report back on meetings and build strong partnerships with internal teams and external organisations to share good practice, resources and promote sustainability.

To help the E& E Department with the production of reports including ERIC (Estates Return Information Collection), PAM (Premises Assurance Model), Greener NHS reporting, Net Zero Group reporting, ISO14001 management review reports, Financial Reporting, Annual Environmental Report, Care Quality Commission, etc.

Support the E& E Department in the delivery of the Trust Green Plan objectives providing support on a range of projects in energy, water, waste, travel and transport, procurement and green space and biodiversity and other action areas of the plan when relevant.

To deputise for E& E Department colleagues in their absence.

Support colleagues from other Trust departments to deliver a reduction in environmental impact e.g., working with IT to identify savings from alternative technology solutions, HR to support with initiatives such as the cycle to work scheme and Procurement with Fleet or Supply Chain related policies and guidance.

Provide support to the E& E Department with resolution of waste operational issues, providing advice and guidance to staff on waste segregation.

To provide administration support and cover for admin duties, as and when required.

  • Education to degree level or equivalent with a professional qualification in waste management, sustainable development, environmental management or similar (NEBOSH, C& G, NVQ L6) or Equivalent experience and working knowledge to demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following specialisms waste management, sustainable development, environmental or energy management


  • Environmental management in a large organisation.
  • Professional registration in field e.g. IEMA or CIWM
  • Knowledge of wider sustainability agenda



  • Experience of interfacing with IT systems, for the retrieval and management of energy and environmental information e.g., waste and recycling data, meter readings for electricity and water consumption, mileage data for fleet vehicles.
  • Experience in the maintenance of, or contribution to, environmental management systems


  • Understanding of public sector
  • Working experience with professional bodies
  • Involvement in projects in technical areas e.g. energy, waste, sustainability, transport.



  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of routine work procedures, practices, underpinned by theory or practical experience which may be applied to Estates and Facilities Environmental work
  • Knowledge and understanding of Estates operational environmental procedures acquired through on the job training, induction, or introductory level qualification.
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental management systems including ISO 14001.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability issues and principles including waste, energy, and travel.
  • A working knowledge of current health & safety legislation in relation to environmental issues
  • Basic knowledge of audits in an environmental context.
