About us
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the UK, employing over 28,000 staff and is responsible for running a family of ten hospitals across six separate sites. MFT is the main provider of hospital care to approximately 750,000 people in Manchester and Trafford and the single biggest provider of specialised services (which includes Genomic Medicine) in the North-West of England.
The focus of the Rare Disease NHS Genomic Network of Excellence is to (i) help patients get a diagnosis faster (ii) reduce genomic health inequalities (iii) develop new testing approaches (especially for those patients with a suspected rare disease that remain undiagnosed using current NHS genomic testing (iv) increase the efficiency of analysis and (v) increase capacity for rare condition clinical trials.
The Manchester BRC was awarded more than 60 million (2022-27) and is driving forward pioneering research in the areas of high-burden under-researched conditions (rare conditions, hearing health and mental health), disease complexity and multimorbidity (next generation phenotyping and diagnostics, next generation therapeutics), cancer (prevention and early detection, advanced radiotherapy, precision medicine, living with and beyond cancer) and inflammation (rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease, respiratory medicine, dermatology, integrative cardiovascular medicine).
