There is an opportunity for an experienced BMS to join our Transfusion Team. This post is based across the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and Princess Royal Hospital , Haywards Heath.

Brighton is a Level 1 Trauma Centre and has obstetric, neonatal, renal, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular, paediatrics, neurosurgery and other services. We are also linked to the Medical School at Brighton.

Princess Royal has urology, orthopaedics, obstetrics, emergency services and other services including remote services at a burns and plastics site.

This post would include rotation across both sites giving the candidate two different hospitals and a wide range of specialities.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the day to day running of the Blood Transfusion department, ensuring UKAS and MHRA standards, staff training and general leadership duties as directed by the Lead BMS.

Supervising Biomedical Scientists, trainees and MLAs, including training of junior staff completing their Registration & Specialist Portfolios.

To practice as a Senior Specialist HCPC Registered BMS to provide a high-quality service.

The individual will be expected to apply professional judgement and utilise specialist skills and detailed scientific knowledge to provide a high quality and timely result service.

The successful candidates must be HCPC registered and has obtained a MSc Biomedical Sciences Degree or relevant experience at Band 6 as well as demonstrating a high level of knowledge and commitment aimed at maintaining and developing a quality service in their specialisation.

The laboratory has full training status with the HCPC and IBMS.The department offers support and encouragement of your CPD and the opportunity to attend approved external courses when available.

The Laboratory is currently UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards.

Excellent communication and organisational skills.Excellent written and spoken EnglishExperience of the above mentioned analysers would be an advantageAble to plan and priorities own workload.IT Literate with experience of LIMS systems .

Job responsibilities

Communicate information and issues within the teams to ensure the continual and efficient running of the Department.

Actively participate in team meetings and departmental Huddles.

Act as liaison between the laboratory and other users of the service and deal with enquiries from users, patients and other members of staff in a polite and helpful manner, seeking specialist scientific advice where required.

Provide information to patients and other users of the service according to current standard operational procedures.

Empathetically resolve complaints received from patients and users in a kind and compassionate manner seeking appropriate guidance from senior management when required.

Liaise with the specialism team across the Trust to ensure that working practices are consistent.
