NHSE (South West) has confirmed funding for a full-time Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist training placement in Gloucestershire CAMHS to study for the Professional Doctorate in Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Applications are invited for this traineeship which includes flexible funding for either a 5- or 6-year post. This funding consists of a bespoke package based on where the successful applicant is on the training journey. It can include:

• The course fees for the 2-year pre-clinical psychoanalytic infant observation training Working with children, young people & families: a psychoanalytic observational approach (M7)
• Fees for personal psychoanalysis and travel expenses with an approved training analyst (5 years, 3 times a week in year 2 and then 4 times a week in years 3-6).
• Doctoral course fees and travel expenses for the 4-year clinical training.
• The option of being employed during the 2nd year of the pre-clinical training as an Assistant Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist within CAMHS at Band 5 WTE. Employment as a Trainee Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist (Band 6 WTE) in Gloucestershire CAMHS for the subsequent 4-year clinical period.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant would need to apply to one of the pre-clinical trainings recognised by the Association of Child Psychotherapists from September 2024. Those who have secured a place on this course, or who have completed a first year, will also be eligible to apply for the traineeship.

The successful applicant will have previous experience of working with children and young people in a professional or voluntary capacity and have an interest in, and some understanding of psychoanalytic thinking.

The successful applicant will subsequently need to independently apply to, and be accepted onto, a professional doctorate course funded by NHSE South West at one of the Training Schools (Tavistock & IPCAPA) accredited by the Association of Child Psychotherapists in order to proceed to the full clinical training (4 years). Progress towards becoming a trainee is not assured by being offered this post alone. It is hoped that where possible before applying for the clinical training, applicants would have begun personal analysis with an ACP approved training analyst who they will expect to continue in analysis with throughout their clinical training. Some experience of being a patient in a psychoanalytically informed treatment would be helpful to anyone applying for the clinical training.

Gloucestershire CAMHS has a team of 4 qualified Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists across the service and active trainees at different stages of their training.
