The main purpose of this clinical role is to train to assist the Consultant Surgeons who carry out Robotic Surgical Lists in the operating theatre as the robotic surgical assistant. The trainee SCP will develop skills and knowledge to act as the patient side first surgical assistant in all robotic procedures.

In addition, as appropriate to work towards once qualified depending on speciality, training status and experience, they will undertake duties beyond that of scrub practitioner including contributing to the pre-operative setting (Pre-assessment clinic), input into early post-operative inpatient care particularly with regards to Enhanced Recovery Pathways and in the outpatient clinic following discharge.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will, as appropriate depending on speciality, training status and experience, have opportunities to be involved with specialist clinics acting autonomously within agreed boundaries in keeping with recognised competencies acquired during continuing professional development. They will always act within their scope of practice, at a predetermined level of supervision and follow agreed guidelines and protocols. Robotic assistants will have individual Nurse Mentors and Surgeon Mentors who would support them in their clinical roles and duties.

In partnership with members of the multidisciplinary team the post holder will train to develop, implement and evaluate a seamless robotic surgical service, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care. Being part of this specialist team, the trainee SCP must develop towards demonstrating a high level of expertise within the specialist service, providing specialist advice, education, clinical care and support to health care professionals and patients.

The post holder will, through their development to and / or experience as a trainee SCP, contribute to the ongoing development of clinical practice, research and standards of care within the service in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues always ensuring the safety and wellbeing of service users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in theatres.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Previous experience of nursing student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate level.
  • Competencies as defined by the RCS Surgical Care Team Guidance Framework' and 'Curriculum Framework for the Surgical Care Practitioner (RSC, 2014).


Desirable

  • Experience as a surgical first assistant in Robotic Surgery.
  • Evidence of research or audit experience.
  • Experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area.
  • Experience of Robotic Surgery within theatres.


Eligibility/Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • RN1 or RN12 Registered Nurse or ODP.
  • Mentorship Course or Equivalent or Equivalent Experience
  • BSc/1st Degree or Equivalent or Equivalent Experience
  • Surgical practitioner course or equivalent (for Qualified SCP) or willingness to


Desirable

  • Be able to perform independent procedures as per surgical speciality.
  • Surgical First Assistant (SFA) qualification.
  • Masters Degree, or equivalent experience
  • Non-Medical Prescribing course or willingness and ability to commit to the training.
