The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton is part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. We provide acute services to the people of Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and more specialists and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south coast of England, including being one of the Major Trauma Units along the South East Coast.

We are looking for a clinician who has substantial post-graduate experience, at Band 6 or 7 level including Stroke and Neurological patients within the NHS setting. Candidates need to have experience in the assessment and treatment of Stroke patients in the acute setting

Working within the Stroke Team, you will help lead a team providing inpatient care to the Hyper acute stroke Unit and as needed in reach to other Teams and Wards as Service needs, to cover patients and other inpatient wards at the Royal Sussex County Hospital as the Service and patient flow requires.

You will be involved in assessing and treating stroke patients from emergency admissions from both Brighton and the surrounding south east coast areas. You will also be involved in managing and taking part in the Stroke seven day service.

As a valued member of an established MDT and Stroke Physiotherapy Team you will have opportunities to develop your clinical, managerial and teaching skills. You will be closely involved in the continued development of the Stroke Physiotherapy service in conjunction with the other band 7's.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide day to day operational management of the physiotherapy team on the stroke unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital
  • As an autonomous practitioner to carry a clinical caseload of patients who may have complex and/or chronic presentations.
  • Toprovide specialist advice to other professionals both within the Trust and outside agencies
  • To be responsible for teaching, supervision and appraisal of Band 6 and Band 5 staff, and undergraduate students to ensure a high quality of clinical care within the speciality.

  • Provide day to day operational management of the physiotherapy team on the stroke unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (as part of a 7 day rostered service) in conjunction with the other 0.5 WTE band 7 on stroke.
  • As an autonomous practitioner to carry a clinical caseload of patients who may have complex and/or chronic presentations and require advanced clinical reasoning skills and treatment of Neurological conditions. To determine clinical diagnoses and physiotherapy treatment indicated, and to maintain records.
  • To provide specialist advice to other professionals both within the Trust and outside agencies e.g. nursing staff, and other health and social service colleagues.
  • To be responsible for teaching, supervision and appraisal of Band 6 and Band 5 staff, and undergraduate students to ensure a high quality of clinical care within the speciality.


Person Specification

Essential and desirable

Essential

  • BSc/MSc Physiotherapy
  • HCPC Registered
  • Experience of managing a Team/MDT
  • Experience of the rehab pathway from Secondary care to Primary
  • B7 Experience in Stroke and Neurological rehab
  • Previous experience supervising students
  • Curious clinician/evidence of autonomous practice
  • Evidence of HR polices and managing staff on them competently
  • Evidence of Trust values and awareness of the needs of others
  • Completed all core B5 and 6 rotations


Desirable

  • Evidence of post grad education, role relelvant
  • Awareness of system Healthcare approach
  • Members of special interests groups
  • Completion of Leadership courses
  • Ward based Respiratory skills
