Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Bioinformatician (AfC Band 7) to join our dynamic team of scientists at the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS, Salisbury).

You will provide bioinformatics expertise to support diagnostic genomic testing applied to both rare disease and oncology, as well as contributing to research and development projects, working closely with staff across the department. You will be responsible for the testing, validation and implementation of analytical pipelines required to analyse genomic data (e.g., next-generation sequencing) for a range of applications.

Experience of programming (e.g., Python/R) and next-generation sequencing analysis is essential. STP/route 2 trainees close to completion of relevant training will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

The WGLS is a new integrated genomics testing service formed from the amalgamation of Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, now WGLS (Salisbury) and Molecular Pathology based at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). The WGLS is also a member of the Central & South Genomic Laboratory Hub.

Person Specification

Qualifications / training required

Essential

  • Honours degree in relevant science subject.
  • MSc in relevant subject or equivalent level of knowledge
  • Should be a State Registered Clinical Scientist, but suitably qualified individuals without registration will be considered


Desirable

  • PhD in subject relevant to clinical speciality


Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential

  • Highly skilled and knowledgeable in appropriate subject.
  • Leadership skills.


Desirable

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of clinical (speciality) service and service provision in a range of sub-specialities.


Aptitudes and skills required

Essential

  • To have the knowledge and experience necessary to participate in the provision of a diagnostic clinical service.
  • To keep abreast of current understanding of general aspects and develop more specialist knowledge in the discipline.
  • To have laboratory practical skills necessary to trouble-shoot and develop methods and carry out research projects and audits.
  • To possess excellent programming and IT skills with evidence of competency working with a variety of programming languages (e.g. Python, R) operating systems and shell environments (e.g. Windows and Linux. Bash)
  • To be a good communicator (oral and written) explaining complex information clearly to a range of staff groups.
  • To be able to work both independently and collaboratively with other medical and scientific staff. To be responsible for training.
  • Able to maintain judgement under pressure and meet deadlines and contractual arrangements.
