Are you an experienced adult Speech and Language Therapist looking for a new challenge or an exciting secondment opportunity?

Would you like to use or develop skills in critical care, tracheostomy management and instrumental swallow assessments?

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a positive, reliable, and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our therapies team on a 12-month fixed term contract. You will be a senior figure in the team, providing the highest quality assessment and rehabilitation to inpatients with a range of cardio-thoracic conditions. You will have the opportunity to support patients on critical care as well as on our surgical and medical wards. You will be an integral member of the team and encouraged to take a lead in areas of interest, contributing to weekly ITU MDT meetings, staff and student training and influencing policies and guidelines.

We offer a responsive FEES service for all inpatients that may need this alongside a weekly videofluoroscopy clinic. Ideally, you would have experience and competencies in instrumental assessments however this is not essential, and training and supervision can be provided.

Job responsibilities

We can offer you:

Regular clinical supervision from your band 7 and 8a colleagues. Opportunities to supervise junior therapists and students.

Regular exposure and opportunities to develop competencies in FEES, critical care and tracheostomy management.

A small but friendly team with strong emphasis on CPD, clinical audit, service improvement and research.

Regular working hours (Monday Friday). Weekend and bank holiday working not required.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
  • Health Care Professional Council - Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists or equivalent
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Master's degree equivalent
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups
  • Post graduate dysphagia qualification


Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level
  • Demonstrable relevant experience post qualification, evidence of working as a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist, ideally in an acute setting.
  • In-depth experience managing complex dysphagia.


Desirable

  • Experience of VFS and/or FEES
  • Experience working with tracheostomy and ventilated tracheostomy patients

  • Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
  • Demonstrates ability to be a good team member and develop leadership responsibilities
  • Well established knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools relevant to the specialist client group
