Band 6 Rotational Occupational Therapist (37.5 hours) permanent

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your Occupational Therapy career by joining our Band 6 Occupational Therapy rotation at West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust. This position allows the post holder to further their experience in a variety of settings. The rotations are 6 months in duration, across the following areas:
  • Emergency Department / Acute Assessment Unit
  • Frailty Unit
  • Elderly
  • Medical
  • Community bed based Rehabilitation
  • Stroke
  • Orthopaedics and Surgery


Main duties of the job

The post holder will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills across the above rotations by contributing to service development and supervision of qualified staff. Each rotation is supported by a well-established supervision and in-service training programme. There are also opportunities for study leave and course funding both internally and externally.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The department is a 7 day working service and this post would be included in that rota (frequency of 1:4 - 1:6 weekends) with rest days in the following week. This is underpinned by a competency framework.

Watford General Hospital is within easy walking distance of the Metropolitan line (underground) and Watford Junction Station. Car drivers have easy access via main motorways and access to our staff car park. There may be a requirement for cross site travel.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications:

Essential

  • Occupational Therapy degree qualification or equivalent & NHS experience
  • Registration with the Health Care Professions Council
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development and reflective practice


Desirable

  • Membership of BAOT/COT
  • Membership of special interest group
  • Experience on a broad band 5 or band 6 rotational scheme
  • Attendance at post-graduate course(s) in relevant field
  • Attendance at Student supervisors course within last 3 years


Knowledge:

Essential

  • Understanding of Occupational Therapy structure in NHS
  • Understanding of Occupational Therapy models of practice
  • Standards - HCPC/COT/Local Legislation and litigation related to Occupational Therapy
  • Professional ethics and their application in practice
  • Policies and procedures (local e.g. Health and Safety)
  • Ability to search and review the evidence base
  • Understanding of clinical governance and the implications for the service
  • Commitment to lifelong learning
  • Application of specific assessment techniques


Desirable

  • Evidence of written projects/audits

Experience:

Essential

  • Clinical problem solving ability
  • Highly developed physical skills, dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills for assessment and treatment of patients
  • Ability to assess patient conditions, establish a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan, from a range of OT modalities
  • Physical fitness to move and handle patients and equipment


Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in the acute hospital setting (qualified or as a student


Skills and ability:

  • Ability to teach patients, relatives and carers individually/in groups
  • Ability to teach and present to qualified / non-qualified staff and other disciplines, in groups or individually, using a variety of media
  • Ability to communicate complex and or sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance - knowledge of barriers to understanding
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, other disciplines, patients, relatives, and carers
  • Ability to communicate effectively and confidently in case conferences, discharge planning meetings, and MDT meetings
  • Able to keep legible and accurate patient records in English Good written/spoken English
  • Administration - statistical data collection, department tasks, patient records
  • Ability to take responsibility for own caseload, organising, delegating and prioritising
  • Health, safety and risk awareness
  • Presentation skills
