We are seeking a highly specialist practitioner psychologist or psychotherapist to join the team of Cancer specialist psychological professionals working across UHSX. The new post holder will work between Worthing hospital and St Richards hospital in Chichester and be part of a larger team who work in all 4 main UHSx hospitals. They will deputise for the service lead, provide clinical leadership re the provision of psychological therapies in cancer care in Worthing and Chichester, carry a clinical caseload and provide staff supervision and training.
Main duties of the job
To provide a psycho-oncology service to inpatient and outpatient services within Cancer services based at St Richards hospital Chichester and Worthing Hospital. (Travel is expected between the 2 sites, and infrequent travel to Brighton). The work will include not only service delivery, planning, development, and evaluation, but also clinical work with patients and their families teaching staff support, supervision, audit and clinical governance activities.
Provides expert clinical leadership re the provision of psychological therapies for cancer patients & their families in UHSussex.
Works with and deputises for the Lead Psychotherapist on the provision of high-quality psychological care of cancer patients and staff caring for them in UHSussex.
Provides specialist advice and consultation on psychological aspects of care to multidisciplinary teams, patients & carers.
Provides clinical supervision & a training for other staff members involved in the provision of psychological care of cancer patients in the inpatient & outpatient settings of UHSussex.
Manages psychological therapists (volunteers, trainees & paid members of staff) to ensure the effective & efficient provision of psychological therapies service for cancer patients & relatives in inpatient & outpatient areas of UHSussex.

To provide highly specialised psychological therapy with clinical autonomy and to work in ways that recognise equality & diversity.
To provide training on psychological care of cancer patients that is accessible to staff throughout the trust that includes level 1 and level 2 accredited training in psychological care of cancer patients.
Provide assessment and highly specialist counselling & psychotherapy to cancer patients with complex & high levels of distress.
To utilise at an expert level an extensive range of therapeutic approaches for a broad range of psychological conditions that cancer patients may experience eg EMDR, psychosexual therapy, ACT.
To undertake risk assessment and risk management considering the level of trauma & distress experienced by the patient.
To refer on to appropriate psychiatric, social or health care agencies as required.
Assess physical, psychological & social care needs of highly distressed patients and families and refer to a wide range of other staff and support agencies.
To refer the clients /patients with less complex psychological needs to other psychological therapists in the team as appropriate after assessment.
To ensure the written information provided is of an acceptable good standard in line with Trust policies and to monitor same.
To maintain complex clinical records and ensure all documentation is securely stored in line with Trust and UKCP / BACP / HPCP guidelines.
To advise medical and nursing staff on the appropriate use of interventions in line with guidelines and protocol.
To document contacts with clients in the appropriate documentation including the identified database used within the Trust.
To ensure good communication is in place with cancer Multidisciplinary teams & disciplines across the trust involved in the care of cancer patients.

To support the lead psychotherapist in policy, research, and service development, which includes taking the lead on audits, service development and service delivery projects (implementation) and represent, as necessary, the Cancer psychological therapies service within the department.
To utilise theory, evidence-based literature, and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other relevant professionals. To present at audit meetings in the service.
To initiate project management.
To conduct audit of service users and to continuously monitor the clinical effectiveness of the service.
To utilize theory, evidenced based literature and research to support evidenced based work.
To communicate research/audit findings to staff in other key areas.
People Management and Development
To provide leadership within the field of psychological cancer care across the Trust through demonstration of expert practice and mentorship.

Manages allocation & placement of volunteer & trainee counsellors/ psychotherapists/ psychologists.
Works with & supports the Lead Psychotherapist and Cancer Management team on the provision of psychological care for staff looking after cancer patients.

- At least 4 years experience of working in NHS in cancer & palliative care
- Trained and practising as a supervisor, accredited or working towards accreditation
- Evidence of managing teams of staff
- Evidence of assessing and administering psychological care to cancer patients at all stages of disease
- Ability to manage IT requirements ie working online, xcel, microsoft365, working across other NHS IT platforms
- Works unsupervised, manages own time and works at an expert level
