We are looking for a Staff Nurses to join our mixed speciality units (Bumblebee & Hedgehog Wards). The patient mix is varied and covers both surgical and medical specialities with lengths of stay varying between day-case and long-term admission of six weeks or more.

You will be delivering care to patients with a diverse range of conditions and it provides great opportunities to develop a breadth of nursing experience. Some of the specialities include neurology, cardiac, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, general surgery, urology, respiratory to name a few.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as a skilled member of the nursing team, to provide a high standard of holistic family centered care to the children, young people and families.
  • To provide the highest standard of nursing care for the children, young people and their families at all times.
  • Ability to promote family centered care and establish good relationships with children, young people and their families.
  • To communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care for individual children and to supervise other staff in this activity.
  • To be able to take charge of the ward in the absence of senior nursing staff following achievement of required competence.
  • To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • To be familiar with and adopt the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officers vision for Compassion in Practice (NHS Commissioning Board Dec 2012).

Person Specification

Academic/Professional Qualification

Essential

  • Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) registered Nurse Or Able to join the NMC child branch register for candidates educated outside of the UK
  • Relevant nursing qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development linked to demonstrable competencies


Desirable

  • Practice Assessor & Preceptorship course or equivalent


Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of having worked with acute/chronically sick children and young people or transferable specialist skills
  • Understanding of professional and current issues in children's nursing
  • Understanding of the importance of research and evidence-based practice
  • Understanding of safeguarding issues according to Trust policies and procedures
  • Understanding and evidence of fulfilling requirements for NMC revalidation
  • Understanding of principles of clinical governance (e.g. risk management, audit, quality)


Skills/Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to plan and prioritise care for patients
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to confidently use and navigate IT systems to provide care and complete duties
  • Advanced time management skills
  • Able to prioritise own work and delegate tasks as appropriate
