The Pharmacy Department have an opportunity to recruit a Specialist Pharmacy Technician for Admissions. You will become part of a unique team in a highly patient-focused role to collaborate with colleagues on shaping and developing pharmaceutical practice to further develop and progress your career.

The Pharmacy Admissions Team consists of highly-specialist and specialist Pharmacists, Technicians and Pharmacy Assistants providing a 7-day service to our Emergency Department and medical admissions wards.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a forward thinking teaching hospital offering acute care to a population of approximately one million. We are one of the largest acute teaching hospitals in the UK with strong links to both the School of Pharmacy and the Medical School at the nearby University of East Anglia. Electronic prescribing and medicines administration has been implemented across all inpatient wards, the A& E and outpatients. We are at the forefront of healthcare delivery with a strong focus on Medicines Management and innovative pharmaceutical practice.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Pharmacy Technician with great interpersonal skills to join a team who are responsible for providing service to these units working alongside medical, nursing and other healthcare staff to ensure patients receive optimal pharmaceutical care and to help improve the flow of patients. The Admissions Pharmacy Technician will help to achieve this through undertaking tasks such as obtaining drug histories, getting medication ready for patient discharge and counselling patients on medication. This post would suit an experienced Pharmacy Technician, who will strive to improve quality of care for patients and develop Pharmacy Technician roles. The post holder will be involved in supporting good medicines management practices.

You will be self-motivated, able to work independently and be capable of working in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate the Trusts PRIDE values. It is also important that you have a flexible approach so that you can work in the different areas of the department.

We provide a 7-day service, working shifts (currently 8:00am to 7:15pm) including weekends (maximum 1 in 4 weekends) and bank holidays. We would consider alternative flexible working patterns dependent on the applicant's requirements.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To provide, in conjunction with the appropriate Clinical Pharmacy Practitioners, a ward technician medicines management service on specified wards
  • To undertake drug history taking in conjunction with the appropriate Clinical Pharmacy Practitioners on specified wards
  • To be responsible for ensuring timely supply of appropriate discharge medication for specified wards
  • To provide counselling advice to patients on their medicines, providing advice to patients and carers about compliance issues
  • To liaise with the Clinical Pharmacy Practitioners and Senior Pharmacy Technicians in Dispensary and Stores to inform of current medicines use on the wards in order that optimal ward stocks are maintained. To be responsible for processing drug returns on specified wards
  • To organise and undertake the dispensing and distribution of all medicines against a previously clinically checked prescription or request in line with departmental policies and procedures and the Medicines Act 1965 using the JAC computer system.
  • To dispense all controlled drugs (CDs) against a recognised order of previously clinically checked prescription in line with departmental policies and procedures and the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 using the JAC computer system
  • To maintain documentation to support the dispensing of all medicines including CDs
  • To lead in the replacement of Dispensary stock including the ordering, receipt and maintenance of stock records in liaison with the Senior Pharmacy Technician, Stores
  • To issues medicines to all outpatients attending the Pharmacy Department to include giving appropriate advice and counselling to ensure the effective use of medicines by the patient

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BTEC or NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Accredited checking Technician for final checking of dispensed medicines


Experience

  • Previous experience in hospital pharmacy
