The successful post holder will be expected to expertly lead and develop the therapy service to Neonates

As a Specialist Physiotherapist in Neonates you will undertake research projects, evaluation and implementation of evidence based practice in order to ensure that high quality services are based on the best available evidence

The Specialist Physiotherapist in Neonates will work in partnership with the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Neonatal Operational Delivery Network

The role will also involve 0.2 WTE supporting the wider Paediatric Therapy Team (including ensuring respiratory competence of physiotherapy staff working within paediatrics)

In addition, you will be actively supported and to undertake courses and further training develop your clinical skills and practice in this specialist area

Main duties of the job

To work autonomously as the lead Physiotherapist providing a clinical specialist physiotherapy service within the Neonates and associated specialist clinics

To carry a clinical caseload and work at an advanced level of clinical practice as the lead Physiotherapist providing clinical specialist physiotherapy service for neonates

To educate, train and develop therapy staff in this specialty and to provide assurance of competency. To train other health professionals in aspects of care relating to physiotherapeutic management of this patient group

To lead and support audit and research projects in order to evaluate service delivery.

NB: it is expected that 0.8WTE of this role will be spent delivering and developing neonatal physiotherapy services, with the remaining 0.2 WTE spent supporting the wider Paediatric Therapy Team (including ensuring respiratory competence of physiotherapy staff working within paediatrics)

Job responsibilities

To provide robust clinical leadership to the therapy team in the provision of an effective, high quality Therapy Service for Neonates (in and out patients), associated specialist clinics and wider Paediatric therapy team. This is achieved through effective communication, influencing, motivating and inspiring others to deliver high quality care. This includes responding to national initiatives and advising on appropriate clinical and professional strategy relating to physiotherapy practice within neonates. .

To be a physiotherapy clinical expert and provide clinical leadership in neonatal physiotherapy services

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own clinical caseload and to manage the clinical risk within own caseload

To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive and timely patient treatment records in accordance with Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and local service standards of practice.

To practice independently at a highly advanced and expert level, whilst effectively assessing risk, using more senior medical advice when appropriate.

To undertake expert assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies. This involves the following processes

The use of expert clinical reasoning skills.

The use of expert knowledge of evidence based practice.

The use of expert assessment techniques to interpret clinical and non- clinical facts in order to provide an accurate diagnosis or differential diagnosis and prognosis of theiruse of expert analytical and investigative skills in order to make judgements about highly complex or unique facts and situations where there may be a range of options, or lack of current opinion or guidance.

To use expert knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options in order to formulate and deliver an individual Physiotherapy treatment programme often in situations where conflicting advice exists.

To formulate a clinical opinion in order to recommend best course of physiotherapy intervention, to reassess and progress treatments accordingly in order to develop, inform and influence further management and discharge plans

To ensure clinical provision to relevant clinics and facilitate changes in practice by creating and designing effective strategies

To identify, develop and implement innovations in staff development and improvements in clinical practice in light of Trust and national priorities.

To frequently provide highly specialised/expert spontaneous advice, guidance, formal and informal teaching to junior and senior team members, parents/relatives, carers, and other health care professionals both internal and external to the Trust

To work collaboratively with the Team Lead Physiotherapist for Paediatrics to develop and ensure respiratory competence of physiotherapy staff working within Paediatrics (this will include the delivery of on call training)

To communicate highly sensitive, contentious and complex information, this may include situations where there is potential conflict and will require a highly developed education and counselling role, as well as advanced communication skills of negotiation, persuasion, with patients, carers and staff

To clearly convey highly complex knowledge of treatment techniques, anatomy and physiology across a wide spectrum of possible scenarios for staff and for patients and carers

To be an active member of the on call rota and to be responsible for maintaining competency in this clinical area

To demonstrate a robust understanding and application of governance and risk, and to be able to apply this understanding to own clinical practice and clinical practice of others.

Maintain a high standard of personal behaviour, consistent with professional expectation, and, reflective of the Trusts values, and ensure effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients, carers and relatives. Act with personal and professional integrity within ethical and legal frameworks and process to maintain and improve standard

Additionally ordering, monitoring and ensuring that equipment use is safe by checking / testing equipment prior to use and maintenance reporting.

To observe a personal duty of care in relation to all resources, equipment and assets encountered in the course of your work.

To ensure the working environment is maintained in a safe and tidy manor and ensure all staff use equipment and resources appropriately.

To contribute to the professional agenda at a local, regional and national level by offering expert information in a Clinical Specialist capacity by providing appropriate advice to own and other professionals on care practices, service delivery and service development.

To represent the Therapies Department and Physiotherapy Service at multi-professional meetings as required at both internal and external meetings

To continually develop the role of the Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist for Neonates by promoting awareness of the role throughout the Trust, local ICB, and nationally

To be responsible for maintaining own capability and competency to practice through CPD activities and recognise the limits of individual competence and knowledge, undertake further training and academic qualifications as relevant to the role and service requirements, integrating new knowledge into current practice. Take responsibility for personal and professional updating and development, including mandatory training.

Provide mentorship, coaching, supervision and shadowing opportunities to individuals in order to support their development.

Participate in the appraisal process and maintain a professional portfolio which supports reregistration.

To promote a culture of learning within Physiotherapy that supports reflective practice to ensure continuous improvement and development.

To be responsible for ensuring the development of current knowledge of all relevant staff by identifying learning and training needs and delivery of clinical effectiveness and evidence-based practice strategies and analysis of current research in relation to own specialism.

To lead planning, organisation, delivery and quality evaluation of the in-service education and learning programme within Paediatric and Neonatal therapy services

To ensure that educational opportunities are developed for the other healthcare staff groups relating to neonatal physiotherapy

To provide education, guidance and support to a range of physiotherapy and other staff, on paediatric and neonatal skills and knowledge, and assess and evaluate their capabilities in these domains.

To undertake teaching/lecturing as requested and ensure links between practice, professional bodies and HEIs.

To participate in education and training meetings related to Clinical Specialist role i.e. medical team meetings, education with regional and national groups, clinical interest groups and external courses and conferences.

To facilitate the skills development for physiotherapy staff working in Paediatrics and Neonates in order to achieve seamless succession planning.

To coordinate and facilitate the involvement of Physiotherapy Services in planning and delivery of educational and research presentations at Trust and similar events outside the Trust relevant to specialist area of practice

To represent the Trust, Physiotherapy and Neonatal Services with formal presentations at Trust and regional and national conferences.

Person Specification

Experience and knowledge

Essential

• HCPC and CSP registration
• Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within speciality, e.g. post registration training, management / Leadership competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio
• Advanced knowledge and skills in the specialist assessment and treatment of a wide range of complex clinical presentations relating to neonatal patients
• Good knowledge and application of all areas of Clinical Governance including Quality, Audit and Risk management
• Awareness of current evidence in neonatal care and application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills
• Significant post registration experience of which considerable experience has been in this specialty in an acute NHS organisation
• Experience of and commitment to clinical and organisational audit and research
• Evidence of leading change management and innovation in clinical practice
• Experience of leading the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and standards
• The ability to design and lead a training programme
• Experience of staff management including supervision and of development and performance management of staff
