The Hand unit within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham is a regional hand centre for patients with acute and complex needs, in addition to being a tertiary centre for peripheral nerve injuries.

We are looking for a motivated and experienced Upper Limb Therapist (Occupational or Physiotherapist) to join our expanding team. You will join a large Upper Limb therapy team to assist in the delivery of a high-quality care. You will be responsible treating a range of acute and complex upper limb patients, including hand, elbow and nerve trauma, post-operative rehab and have opportunity to gain experience in numerous clinical sub specialists (major trauma, sports rehabilitation, rheumatology, emergency medicine, research)

This post will be based within our Upper Limb rehabilitation department including a supportive team of specialist OT's, Physio's and Therapy assistants. You will also work within MDT upper limb trauma clinics alongside surgeons, in addition to elective clinics run at the local Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, a leading elective orthopaedic hospital.

You will need to have experience in a variety of hand / upper limb injuries and conditions and have good splinting skills. You must be keen to develop your clinical skills further whilst developing greater non-clinical responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

* To appropriately manage a clinical caseload within outpatients and take a lead role in the specialist assessment and treatment of patients who have a diverse and complex range of upper limb trauma and conditions in order to determine clinical diagnosis and treatment needs and to maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner.

* To work with the clinical team to deliver a high standard of safe clinical care to this specialty and to achieve service and team KPIs.

* The post holder provides line management support for qualified, students and support staff on a day to day basis across the Upper limb service at QEHB and ROH. This includes supporting senior staff in responsibility for operational management, performance management, staff development, appraisal, team development, implementation of policy and policy changes in own clinical area and to set and monitor standards of practice.

* To undertake and support specific work streams as directed by lead clinicians in this specialty area.

* To participate in service remodelling within the Upper Limb Service in order to improve the patient's clinical pathway.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Appropriate Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy or professional qualification e.g. MCSP/ BSc or MSc.
  • *Registration with Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC)
  • *COT/CSP or equivalent professional registration.
  • *Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own speciality, e.g. post registration training, management competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio.
  • *Relevant, accredited, postgraduate education/courses and CPD


Desirable

  • *Member of relevant professional clinical interest group (BAHT / BESS / MACP etc.)
  • *Attended student educator course


Experience

Essential

  • *Considerable post registration experience of which should an acute NHS organisation and completion of core rotations in MSK / Hand Therapy / Neuro
  • *Thermoplastic splinting experience
  • *Experience of staff management e.g. supervision and support of staff.
  • *Involvement in Multi professional team working

  • *Ability to work autonomously within specialist clinical area & undertake clinical analysis and reasoning skills in the assessment and treatment of patients and apply broad standards & guidelines to own practice.
  • *Good clinical reasoning
  • *Able to demonstrate the ability to select and apply a range treatment options for a range of clinical presentations.
  • *Able to demonstrate advanced physical skills especially in precision, dexterity and hand-eye/sensory co-ordination in order to undertake e.g. palpation and mobilisation at an advanced level.
  • *Good verbal & written skills able to communicate complex clinical information in a clear and logical manner to patients, colleagues and other healthcare professional concerning a wide range of clinical situations.
  • *Good organisational skills including prioritisation and delegation
  • *Ability to comprehend and work within the Trust's policies of data protection, equal opportunities and Health and Safety to meet the differing needs of patients.
  • *Competent knowledge and skill in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of complex acute and chronic clinical presentations.
  • *Excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • *Good knowledge and application of all areas of Clinical Governance including Quality, Audit and Risk management
  • *Knowledge and understanding of the research process with reference to awareness of EBP and application to clinical practice, using good clinical reasoning skills.
  • *Understands the legal responsibilities of the profession
  • *Good understanding of principles of data and statistics and experience of their use in evaluation of service delivery
  • *Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice.
  • *Strong sense of professional integrity, and compliance with Trust vision and values.
  • *Ability to be self-motivated and to motivate team.
