We are seeking to a recruit highly motivated and innovative practitioners to train as Health Visitors to lead 0-19 Public Health Nursing and deliver great service to our children and families in the IOW.

Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN's) work at individual, community and population level in a preventative social model of health, designed to empower families to take control of and improve their own health and wellbeing.

We are inviting NMC qualified nurses (Part 1, Part 2), to apply for a training contract to complete the PgDip/MSc in Public Health Practice, with University of Surrey commencing September 2024 to be completed by September 2025.

As well as academic study you will experience placements within 0-19 teams in the IOW. On successful completion of your studies you will gain a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) qualification in Health Visiting or School Nursing, be offered a post (location to be determined) within our services and paid at salary Band 6.

Main duties of the job

To work as a Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within the community as a member of a multi-disciplinary Health Visiting & School Nursing TeamTo work under the guidance of both a Community Practice Assessor and/or Practice SupervisorTo work with the academic tutor responsible for overseeing your progress and engage in use of the web based learning facilities provided by the relevant University.To attend regular supervisory meetings with PA and/or PS to reflect on practice.To attend practice placement on days designated by the university (including consolidated practice), accounting in your diary for practice hours. The course requires that the student will spend 50% of their time in University and 50% out in practice. The Programme is designed to meet the NMC requirement of 50% practice 50% theory.

The Isle of Wight 0-19 service includes Health Visiting, Public Health Nursing, and School Nursing and is responsible for delivering the Healthy Child Programme to families, children and young people across the Island. The service is delivered within the community and home settings in partnership with families, children and young people and with key partners including:

Quality And Service Improvement

Familiarity with the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act and maintains MCA mandatory training.

SCPHN HV/SN are leaders in the Healthy Child Program.Management and leadership skills will be further developed within the SCPHN Program.Management of self. Completing priorities between academic and practice placementStudents will be required to demonstrate effective leadership progression in order to successfully reach consolidated practice and registration as a SCPHN.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc Nursing or RN currently registered with NMC
  • Evidence of recent study at Level 5
  • Working with children, young people and parents in a variety of settings
  • Working in partnership with a wide variety of agencies
  • Ideally have a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience, some of which must be a senior level, life experience, or be able to articulate experience to date to contribute to the role being applied for
  • Working with children, young people and parents in a variety of settings

  • Experience of teaching and delivering health education information to groups / individuals


Desirable

  • Experienced in assessing and developing patient care plans
